5 out of 5 stars marvelous   May 9, 2000

I just finished this book last night and it's the first Angela Carter book I've read. It certainly won't be the last. Most of it was simply enchanting, whilst other little sections did drag ever so slightly. A good story with loads of little episodes. You'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Quite simply the best book I have ever read!   May 2, 2000

If you want to get your teeth into something raw, earthy, sensual and intelligent, buy this book. From the moment I was introduced to Fevvers, I was spellbound by her unfolding story, deeply touched by her tragedies, appalled at her curriculum vitae, hysterical from laughing at the misfortunate predicaments she got herself in to, but mostly just madly in love with her.

5 out of 5 stars fasinating and absorbing   August 5, 1999

Having been 'forced' to read this as part of an degree course, I didn't expect to enjoy this, but the book's complexity and narration meant that i found it impossible to put down. All the characters are equisitely defined and brought to life, and it is impossible not to warm to them. Unusually, Carter gives equal prominance to animal characters: from the chimps who win their freedom by devoting their spare time to learning, to the tigers who continue to dance only because of their keepers musical skills, Carter gives them minds and feelings which makes it impossible not to sympathise. All in all this is a fascinating book, which is compelling and full of depth.
