5 out of 5 stars O'Brien meets Ulysses in this refreshing Irish romp.   July 12, 2001

Murder, mystery, and missing mauscripts in modern day Dublin. What better way of drawing together 15 of Ireland's top novelists to glorious collaborative effect? The beauty of the multiple novelist approach is that each chapter is as fresh as the first, such that the pace never dies down. The overall effect is perhaps best compared to a Flann O'Brien hybrid with liberal sprinklings of Ulysses references. This is a joy to read for literary allusion spotters and thrilling plot seekers alike. And you can hold your head high in public knowing you've contributed to Amnesty International. Lovely stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Literature with the fun put back in   June 14, 2001

This is what happens when fifteen talented authors (some vastly more than others - nobody beats Roddy Doyle) come out to play and forget they are supposed to be taking this literature stuff seriously and reverently. When I say 'play' I don't mean experimenting with form and style, I mean having a bit of a lark. Reading this I found myself smiling almost immediately, and getting more and more drawn in to the fun. It's the cultural equivalent of being tickled.
