4 out of 5 stars expand your horizons   June 17, 2006

Not a genre I had previously read and probably wouldn't again, but there was something compelling about the book. Starting off, a book seemingly with little plot and simply a vehicle for S & M my interest began to wane. But persevere. I found the second half far more readable, I began to feel more for the characters and began to understand their frailties. A book well worth reading to dip your toe into erotic fiction

As an avid reader of erotic literature both for pleasure and academic reasons, I was compelled to read 'The Story Of O' as it is mentioned in many other works.
I realised that it would not be awfully graphic given the time at which it was published, but given its fame I was expecting something special. I was disappointed.
The plot in itself is different, and at the beginning you get a real sense of how much O loves Rene, as she agrees to obey him, however, for me, the longer the tale went on, the more unrealistic it became. Rene 'gives' O to someone else and she doesn't mind etc... it just got to a point where there was so much that didn't make sense that I was just reading it to get to the end so I could say I've read it!!
It does give an insight into the world of bondage etc... but I found Anne Rice's 'Beauty' trilogy a hundred times better!!
This book failed to inspire any emotion in me, except relief when I'd finished it.

I have never experienced such emotion as when I was reading this the delicious words set out so wonderfully made me feel so alive and gave me some great bright new ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Erotic literature at it's best   June 17, 2003

Written, in a time when erotica and SM were strictly taboo, this novel is devoid of the coarseness that is usually found in works handling the subject.
The cover tells that this is neither a work of fiction nor an autobiographical account. I believe it to be a combination of the two.

From the very first page I was gripped. Who indeed, would think that a walk in the park would lead so quickly to a journey which would change ones life, so completely, forever? So in love is O, that at the Chateau Roissy she abandons all sense of self, stability and safety and commits utterly to her lovers desires, to a live of submission.

A wonderfully written, deeply sympathetic and highly erotic novel, that will be read again and again.

I would also recommend this book, to anyone trying to gain an understanding of SM.

2 out of 5 stars Curiosity value only   September 27, 2002

No doubt when it was first published this book was ground-breaking and controversial. Nowadays this lengthy sexual fantasy about the life of a distinctly submissive woman seems amusingly coy, and almost unreadable.

You could save yourself time and effort by watching the film version, which is a surprisingly faithful adaptation. But that would be another review entirely...
