I wanted this book after hearing it was one of the top charted books in America. I read the description of the book and it sounded good. I thought I would be getting a bump in the night ghost novel. But this isn't what this book is.
It's a novel about Slavery and what Black people faced and what they went through. The book is about Sethe a woman who murdered her own baby (Beloved) and how she comes back to haunt her. When Paul D (Sethe's friend & partner) comes to stay he frightens the ghost of Beloved away, until one day beloved turns up in the flesh.
This Book was an enjoyable read, at times I did struggle with it a little, but there was always something there that made me want to pick the book up again. I found myself moving fast through it at times and slower at others. I felt that this book wasn't so much about a ghost, but more about love, emotions, feelings and family and the struggle with life.
My Verdict: Enjoyable Read.

This masterpiece is such a sensitive and secretive story. I have never cried at anything like I cried when reading this book. It's a heart-warming story which has shocking contrasts.
It reaches a level beyond understanding.

this is a fantastic and haunting read. i bought this book from a second hand bookstore and studied it at college 2 years ago. It is writing at its best, poetic and compelling. I could read it a million times and never ever get bored, it was one of the reasons why i decided to turn off the tele and start reading again. Read and enjoy

Beloved is an extremely poetic novel, Morrisons prose flows and adds depth to the context and characters seen in the novel. However, the complexity of the style and the vague transition from past to present was at times confusing, but you must perservier because its a really good read! I found Morrison portrayed each characters emotions in a very susinct, gripping way, i felt so much sympathy for Denver, the daughter of Sethe (the main character). Morrison has the ability to show the raw vulnerability of motherhood, the jealousy and simple demands of children, and the need to be loved. Morrisons blend of supernatural, and realism are seamless, and set against the post slave period in America, Beloved is a complicated novel, its compelling, and mixes raw emotion, sharp characters, and supernation concepts to create an absolute winner. for anyone who likes to read, this novel will satisfy any reader, and like all good books, will leave interpretation to you, the reader. classed as a feminist text, Beloved is far to much to fit into any literary label. an epic of genre, and a cut above anything else you will read. It didnt win the nobel prize for literature for nothing! Morrisons book is amazing, a great read. i would highly recommend!!!

"Beloved" is the story about a black woman in the mid 1800s, Sethe, who lives alone with her daughter in a house haunted by the spirit of her other daughter, who buried in a grave under a stone reading only 'Beloved'.Into their lives comes first a black man from Sethe's past, putting the spirit out of the house, and joining his life with Sethe's. But soon after, a young black girl appears at the house, calling herself Beloved... with scores to settle and love to demand. An immensely moving tale and undisputable force of literature... Toni Morrison moves to the top of my list.
