4 out of 5 stars Worth reading, very short though!   April 7, 2008

If you've read the His Dark Materials books and enjoyed them you should read this.
There aren't very many pages but as it is set 2 years after the Amber Spyglass it will at least go some way to satisfying your curiosity as to what happened next with Lyra.
There's a map of Oxford (amongst other things) which i must say confused me as it indicated Mary Malone's house which if i remember correctly was in Will's universe rather than Lyra's, a red herring perhaps?
Anyway it's an enjoyable read though far too short, i look forward to "The Book Of Dust" and i think it won't be very long before i re-read "The Amber Spyglass" which for me was by far the highlight of the trilogy.
If you've not read the trilogy you shouldn't even attempt this book, but i suggest you should read those first three straight away!
Don't be put off by them being in the teens/childrens sections, the main characters may be in their early teens but the themes have more than enough depth for an older reader.

4 out of 5 stars Hope   March 23, 2008
With a book like this you are always going to be a little disappointed, as almost all the main characters are missing and it doesn't directly follow the plot lines of His Dark Materials.

But take it is as I did, as a symbol of hope that there would be more books surrounding the same characters.

It's a good story though very short, the hardback version is a beautifully created book, with cloth coverings, maps, postcards. It is a must have for any true fan.

5 out of 5 stars Actually, more like four stars...   February 15, 2008

...but all the same with the current rating of just one star, I had to balance it out a little bit. To be sure, I can certainyl see the other reveiwers point of veiw; there isn't really much to this book. It's short, and perhaps feels a little gimicky on times... but then so what? It's fun! For as slight as it is it's certainly a worthy addition to His Dark Materials, and for the price, well. You can't go wrong. Philip Pullman on a bad day is better then 98% of authors on a good one.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother   January 31, 2008

OK it's a nice little book that took about 20 minutes to read. The story would make no sense at all if you haven't read the trilogy (which I rate as brilliant storytelling for adults and children) and if you have read the Dark Materials books, it adds nothing and is very disappointing.
It's difficult to see what the point is other than blatant merchandising, and it has the air of something knocked out by a staff writer in order to cash in on the great story for children and adults that preceeded it.
All concerned should be ashamed of themselves!

5 out of 5 stars The continuing adventures of Lyra a Silvertongue   January 30, 2008

"This book contains a story in several other things. The other things might be connected with the story, or they might not; they might be connected to stories that haven't appeared yet. It's not easy to tell."

It has now been a couple of years since Lyra had her adventures in the dark materials. She is now settled in the Oxford of her world. Lying on the roof with her daemon, Pantalaimon (From: Pine marten) Lyra speculates on the meaning of the random movements of birds. Little did Lyra realize that this would soon bring her to a new adventure in the search for a well known alchemist; and a new understanding of witches, and life in general.

This story can easily be a trial balloon for a new book.

------------------------------------------------------------

The unabridged production on one compact disk may be a tad more expensive. However it is performed by the author and a full cast on top of this is not a well-designed case and a pamphlet tells a little bit about the beginning of the book also includes some of the materials that he describes the beginning it might've been lost between worlds. There are some pictures of Oxford that might be the real one might not. And a foldout map of Lyra's Oxford.

Bill Pullman sounds awful lot like Jim Dale as he begins his story with a quote from Oskar Baedecker's "The Coast of Bohemia."
