5 out of 5 stars Honest to goodness cooking   January 12, 2008

I was a real sceptic to cookbooks a few months ago. 'It's alright for these celebrity chefs', I would say, 'It's their job to cook up gastronomic epics. We just don't have the time or money for it.'
However, I've admired Jamie Oliver ever since the infamous school dinners campaign, and I thought that I'd give this book and a few recipes a try, if only to confirm my cynical attitude.

Well, I'm converted. Contrary to my previous belief, it's all about proper, honest home cooking with foodstuffs that are readily accessible (from supermarkets and farmers markets), and the recipes are realistic and well explainedin Jamie's endearing matey, lad-round-the-corner tone. Hardly pretentious like I first thought.
And, the incredible thing is; they work! Honestly, you'd think that it'd be of a 'maybe I'll get it right next time' affair, but it isn't. If you follow the instructions, you'll end up surprisingly close to the glossy photos you see in the books. And, of course, the end result is delicious.

As I said, I'm converted, and I feel genuinely enthusiastic about what I eat now. It really doesn't take up as much time or money as you think (perhaps even less when you get into the swing of things), and this will be a New Year resolution that I will eagerly stick to. And I have Jamie and this book to thank for it. Fantastic.

Oh, and I will never have my tomatoes any other way again.

I have all of his books & this is the worst!
Old fashioned layout & ideas.
Theme already done, & much better, by Delia Smith

5 out of 5 stars ............Jamie's turning Italian!   December 31, 2007

Another great book from the man who still drives me to despair when I watch him on TV - his agitated manner is really annoying. However....I am a fan. As a Garden designer who has a passion for vegetables, fruit and cooking - this is just up my street. I often get asked by clients how to cook certain vegetables and I now steer them towards this book or Sarah Raven's book, another seasonal book with fab recipes.
Jamies' recipes again are simple, easy to do, yummy and use fresh fresh fresh food! He is truly turning out to be an adopted Italian! This is what cooking is all about (for some of us anyway), growing the stuff whilst your garden still looks aesthetically pleasing (some vegies are so pretty!), eating the ingredients in super recipes that DO NOT drown the succulent taste of these vegies in sauces.
I have done a few of the Autumn and Winter recipes already, turn out as it says on the tin every time.
I hope this inspires people to grow vegetables and integrate them into their daily diet - once you taste your own beans and potatoes, there is no going back.

3 out of 5 stars Not his best   December 29, 2007

I have all of Jamie's books and i must say this is my least favourite. The pictures in the book do the recipes no favours. Nothing in the pictures looks very appetising. As a mother of two who loves to cook i know that should i put these meals down to my family they would turn their noses up at them.

Not a book i would reccomend and i was very dissapointed with it. I think there was maybe only a couple of recipes that i would cook and that my family would eat. Make sure you have a look at the recipes inside before buying. I know mines will languish on the kitchen bookshelf.

3 out of 5 stars Expecting the kitchen notebook format   October 29, 2007

While I am yet to buy this book, I'm very excited that it's finally been released. I watched the series and tried to write down recipes as they were displayed onscreen. Of course, it was done in such a way that I'd never quite get all the ingredients and his website forbade any exchanging of recipes online.

When I did open a copy of this book for the first time last weekend, I was really disappointed with its layout. As did a previous reviewer, I really hoped it would have been in a kitchen notebook format, similar to that used on the series.

My first Jamie book was Cook with Jamie. When it was given to me, I was really put off by its font type and colour. Then to see it again in this book... what a horrid blue for the titles and a boring font used throughout. Considering how excited Jamie is about his produce and end product, I thought the book would have been put together with a lot more imagination and be more colourful, for starters.

Despite all that, I'm hoping to get it for Christmas, as I really want to make the tomato ketchup, amongst many other things. As a vegetarian, most of Jamie's other books haven't been of much interest to me, but I think that will change with this one. "Cook" also has some stuff I'm going to try. It's great that Jamie is focussing so much on home grown produce.

My current star rating is 3 points, based on non-ownership and first impressions. I'll review that when I have a copy of my own.
