2 out of 5 stars Spring Look not free look   November 6, 2008
Am I the only one that thinks the control system is broken in this game, every other 3ps game like this now has propper freelook on the right stick. i.e. you can look in a different direction than you are walking. point the camera where you want and it will stay there. ususlly with a button to recenter if you want.
but rockstar have opted for a springlook which is a free look when stationary but springs fwd direction when you walk or drive.
this means contiually fighting the spring look if you want to look around while moving which is realy nesesary in this sort of game i.e. i want to throw a grenade walk awayand see the carnage, i want to look down side streets as i drive by no you cant you have to look fwd as we dont believe you have the skill to use propper freelook control. .result cant enjoy the wonderful city they created cant enjoy the game. stopped playing as this really frustrated me.
Another one EDGE got wrong 10 ha no way.
crackdown topped this a year ago.

3 out of 5 stars Same old. Saints Row is far far better.   November 5, 2008

I've enjoyed all the others, and had heard so much mad hype about this one. So now I'm playing it, been enjoying it - yeah it does look amazing, a technical achievement etc.. but..

But that 'fun' feels very familiar to me, like the exact same fun of playing all the previous games - You run, you shoot, you drive, you do jobs, you run some more, you listen to the funny radio shows, sun up, sun down... er, and that's it. I realised 'This really isn't the huge leap forward in gaming that people are making out'. I mean, 5 star reviews?! Come on, at the end of the day this is all the same stuff from the last games.. with a shiny polish. The enemy AI is still moronic, and they've taken out haircuts too.

I tell a lie, it's not as fun as the previous games. The top-down original was more satisfying than this 'realistic' world. To my mind GTA was never meant to be realistic but more like a ludicrous action flick. As MX83 says below - the fun stuff has been ripped out.

You can't spend your money on anything, oh, and once again, the bridges start out 'closed' for some reason and if you stray so much as 1 pixel over - you are hunted and shot down as a five star criminal... And here in the 21st Century this game gives you: a PRINTED MAP. What a stupid game.

There's been Mercenaries, Just Cause, Crackdown, Saints Row before this - all proving you can do something different with the formula. Crackdown may not have motion-captured strippers but it is a hellofa lot more FUN to play. And I can't believe how customisable Saints Row is, clothes, face, cars, and masses of crazy music. It's what GTA4 should've been.

After four games they should really be adding something very new to the mix, not just respraying everything.

At this rate, GTA 5 will be.... A slightly different city? with some new cars, and, oh i don't know.. slightly different buildings? I can barely contain my excitement.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY THE BEST   October 21, 2008

To all those people who are slandering this incredible game i say...YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT.This game never stops giving, its got arguably the best protagonist of any game to date...the great Nikko Bellic.Theres just no way you can even scratch the surface of what this game is capable of in such a short space.Basically, the story is brilliant, the characters are ledgendary, the city is the best open world in videogame history and online multiplayer is second to none and is years ahead of its time.I consider this the single best game ive ever played. The reason for this being that games are designed to be fun, this game is the most fun therefore the best. There is nothing like 16 player free mode in GTA IV.sixteen people let loose across the whole city, with everything that is in the single player available, bar the story and a slight reduction in the variety of traffic.Free mode has by far the most creative potential of any online multiplayer to date and literally is Infinately fun.Dont let theese negative reviews discourage you from buying the best game ever made.People that submit negative reviews are just hoping that having an alternative opinion will somehow make it seem like they know more about the game than the rest of us, or that they simply dont like it themselves as opposed to judging it as a game...this game has sold 10 million copies worldwide as of august 2008, it speaks for itself.JOIN US IN LIBERTY CITY

3 out of 5 stars Half of what it could've been   October 17, 2008
As I loaded the game up and sat through the first cutscene, I began to feel my excitment and anticipation growing.

Ofcourse I'd already read the reviews and despite my concern over its apparent lack of features, I had been reasured by all the top gaming sites and magazines that this was indeed the next step in gaming. And for the first few hours, it was atleast fun. But then something unexpected happened... it got boring.

For a start the missions are all very similar. 9 times out of 10 your sent somewhere and you end up shooting a bunch of people. Thats forgivable though. This is GTA afterall and thats to be expected. It can also be alot of fun, for instance the Bank robbery mission is superb.

But unlike previous installments, there's no real reason for doing anything other than to progress the mildly (very mildly) amusing story and this is where the problems start because the missions alone aren't enough. They're not deep and they're not that varied. They're just GTA.

You can't think to yourself "Once iv'e made X amount, i'll then go and buy this or buy that".... because you CAN'T!! Your options for doing things have been taken away. And whats worse is that there's no reason for it. What's taken away has been replaced with nothing and the excuse were left with, is that it's all in the name of realism.

But they're missing the point.

I don't think most People play GTA for realism. All those hours of messing around with weapons, planes, cars, bikes, parachuting of buildings, flying jetpacks, owning businesses, fighting rival gangs, modding your cars etc. That was the best part. That was the most rewarding part of the whole experience. Go to youtube and you'll see what I mean. Endless videos of people messing around with San Andreas.

But a large part of the above is missing here and as a result, all your left with is a huge,(granted) pretty map with mission points on it. However the guts of the GTA experience have been ripped out. It's half a game, compared to San Andreas it's uncompleted and so for me, although enjoyable in small doses, it felt empty.

Well where do i start? I have recently completed this and sold it on very disapointed with rockstar yes good graphics but thats all. Where is the amzing soundtrack in previous titles fun missions customising your character, parachutes, planes, celeb voice overs and humour. The cars handle awfull. I feel cheated just ordered san andreas and gta 1 to lighten up my days- THIS GTA SUCKS BADLY trust me
