A good, teary chick flick September 28, 2008 I loved this film, seen it twice at cinema. A lot of people found it a little disappointing, but I suppose it really depends on what you are after. It is about a woman who loses her husband to a brain tumour, early on in their lives, and he writes letters to help her move on, little quests if you like. It is moving, and really makes you think about those you love, and if you lost them. I thought the book was by far better than the film, but often, this is the case. The harry potter books are miles better than the film adaptations so there you go. What I liked about this film: gerard butler-is gorgeous, and worth keeping an eye out for. He is a sexy irishmen in this. Hilary Swank is not her best in it, but that could be due to the fact that it is not her usual sort of role. It is a good movie if you want the girlies round, and just need an excuse to crack open that bottle of wine and use them tissues. Get it, and see.
Disappointed September 24, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I really didn't enjoy this film.Having loved the book I was really looking forward to watching this but it just didn't capture the magic of the book at all.A few of my friends who haven't read the book have enjoyed it but my friends who have read it have been disappointed. My advise read the book it's so much better.I think that's the problem the book set too higher standard!
Pleasantly Surprised September 4, 2008 Although I have always meant to get around to it, I have never read the book P.S I Love You, so I didn't really have any preconceptions of what this film was about, what the characters should have been like, or any changes to the actual storyline. Perhaps that's one of the reasons I love this film so much (I know that fans of the book are not so keen on the film), and in my experience, films based on books will never fail to disappoint, unless of course the viewer hasn't read the book first.
As you can tell by the 5 star rating, I loved this film, and I really wasn't expecting to! Reading the story line, I thought this would be dull, boring, full of moaning, grief and tears, no real action, full of the complaining of a mourning widow which, to be honest, didn't really interest me. But the film is so much more than that. From the opening scene where you see Holly and Gerry fighting, yet still feel their strong love beneath it you get a sense of what this film is about - real love, not the fairy tale type you see in most films, but real, genuine love despite knowing each others faults, and what to do once you have your `fairy tale', but your prince charming dies and you're forced to go out into the real world again.
Hilary Swank's performance was faultless, she really conveyed the emotion Holly was feeling to the viewers and was incredibly appealing as a character, not making Holly too miserable at all. Gerard Butler wasn't in this film as much as I would have liked, but his parts where played incredibly well, though there wasn't really much to Gerry's character to play, mostly a loveable, loving, funny, warm, Irish guy. I wasn't a fan of Lisa Kudrow as Denise, but having not read the book am not sure whether that was what Denise's character was really like, or whether Kudrow just portrayed her poorly. Finally, Harry Conick Jr as Daniel deserves a mention too, and I would have liked to see more Daniel and Holly scenes.
I feel like this film is perfect in many ways, though there are a couple scenes I wasn't a fan of. The one that springs to mind was the sex scene between Holly and William. The film had kept my attention without fail the entire way through, but the 10-15 minutes where the three girls get stranded on the lake to where William is telling Holly story's about Gerry were at least in my opinion, a bit flat and weird, and I felt the film would have been better without them.
Overall though, I really do love this film. Maybe not for the fans of the books, but for everyone else, especially fans of chick-flicks, give this one a shot, but don't be put off by the thought of it just being a chick flick as it's so much more, heart-warming + heart breaking at the same time, it's funny, intelligent, and a beautiful story. One I won't forget in a hurry.
P.s I love it!!! September 1, 2008 I am a big fan of cecilia ahern so i had read the book of p.s i love you so when i heard the film was coming out i got exited because the book was amazing. I read a review saying that the film was realy sad and to have tisues ready and i thought well the book was amazing so obviously the film wil not be beter, how wrong could i be. Ididnt prepare with any tisues and i watched this on my own and icryed from the start o finish. For people who do not like this film and on one review it says its a ridiculous film they are very wrong and just hve a heart of stone. The Irish acent were a bit poor but that did not effect the amazing story line and the emotion atatched to this. Gerry and Holly are a typical couple who argue and make up over sily things, it is so lifelike that it can relate to many things. I would recomend to anyone. What an amazing film. But seriously get tisues ready before you watch this. (sorry about speling my wireles keyboard is playing up) xx
Ps what a bad film August 24, 2008 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
Do knock it and what ever you do dont try it! This film is awful. I bought it for my GF (cause im a thoughtul guy )to watch as like most women she loves Romcoms and I thought this would suit her down to the ground.
Hillary swank and Gerard Butler are about as delightful a couple as Margaret Thatcher and David Beckham and their acting is as stale as my crusty socks. I cringed at many of the supposed sentimental scenes between the two main actors in this film and so did my GF. And if anybodies heartstrings are being tugged at in this film, please contact your local emergency services as you are more than likely having a heart attack. But jokes aside, this film lacks even a remote amount of emotion.
The irish accents are just bad bad bad.
The film is full of performances youll want to forget, romance thats as romantic as a candle lit dinner in a sewage works, and comedy as funny as Roseanne Barr dressed as Ghandi. You really shouldnt waste your money or precious time on this film, me and my GF did and its time and money we will never get back.
I always try and give honest reviews and feel that this 2 hour long film has been given just that. Its just a bad movie
Ps. you have been warned.
