3 out of 5 stars Potentially a classic.   October 4, 1999

J.D. Salinger writes with a wonderful fluency, and what makes this book flow, is the way in which he writes in this informal, 'goddam' style. However, what the book lacks is depth and substance, as it meanders through the plotline aimlessly at times. When I finished the book, I felt that it was like reading a first draft of a novel. The author obviously has talent, but is written too hastily, and I feel the story was somewhat rushed towards a hasty conclusion of 'That is all I have to say'. Catcher in the Rye does, however, make excellent light reading.

5 out of 5 stars The book of all books   September 21, 1999

All I can say is that anyone who gives "The Catcher in the Rye" a review of less than 5 stars really hasn't understood the point of the book and should go back and read it again, more thoughtfully.

5 out of 5 stars a must for all teenagers ,and wanabie teenagers   September 14, 1999

If for the rest of my life I was forced to read and only read one book ,Catcher in the rye would be my chose by a country mile.I feel I know the main character ,Holden caulfield and feel better for doing so.He,s mixed up, out of step and out of his depth ,but arent we all. Theres plenty of real belly laughs and tears along the way I humbly urge you to read this an icon of modern literiture.

5 out of 5 stars The most influential book of the 20th Century   August 28, 1999

I felt compelled to send a review as some reviewers have failed to acknowledge the time & the circumstances in which it was published, for some especially the young, this book can be life changing it provides many strains of thought & messages for those who look deeply into it when they read it. It is probably no longer my favourite book but it was influential in encouraging me to move on to other literature & also provided me with a useful insight into the human condition.

5 out of 5 stars A complex insight into human nature   August 15, 1999

Few books written in the 20th century can lay claim to probing and examining the nature of human action and thought as, "Catcher in the Rye." It is not a plot driven book but the plot is an apt one as it provides the ideal setting for the alienation of a teenager and the gradual degeneration of his emotion and life. To those mongoloids who proclaim this book anything less than exceptional I can only remind you as to the watershed nature of the book itself and the revolutionary literary style in which it is written. The book itself moves at a fast pace and constantly provides the reader with new, original insight into the main character's thougts and morals. It is not a plot based book and I would advise that you read it with some lucidity and actually examine what Salinger is trying to say. Apart from being one of the best satire type books of the century 'Catcher in the Rye' is undoubtably the pinnacle of any literary watershed written in the last 100 years.
