1 out of 5 stars a little frustrating....   March 29, 2007

Allen Carr basically has a theory , and he KNOWS he is right , so he'll put together any old flawed logic to justify his theory. Like many reviewers here I had a lot of respect for guy , so while reading this book I was trying to give the guy a bit of slack , but when 90% of the book is based on ludicrous facts , It just becomes frustrating.
In order to loose weight , you NEED to go on a diet first , then you maintain your weight. Think about it , what's the purpose of fat ? , its energy storage to be used when food is in low supply , so how on earth are you going to loose weight when you don't put your body in a low food supply situation??
Allen seems to have a very bright view of evolution , he doesn't comprehend the fact that evolution LIKES death and humans have been trying to cheat evolution ever since we invented spears to kill animals. So when evolution took a very different path with humans ,it is simply WRONG to compare humans with animals.
Chocolate DOES taste good , there is a fruit in the wild that actually tastes like chocolate (Black Sapote).
Of course we put sauces and mustards etc. on the meats , that's because meats are the best flavor absorbers around.
Anyway , if there is anything useful in the book , its either impossible to understand , or heavily overshadowed by flawed content.

I haven't touched a cigarette, or even felt the slightest hint of the desire to have one for over seven years (after 18 prior year's of trying and failing to give up), since I read Allan Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking Permanently in 1999. I didn't know that Mr Carr wrote a weight loss book until I read his obituary last week following his sad death from cancer, ironically from smoking before he gave up. The Easyweigh book is written along the same lines and is just as compelling - I read it in three sittings and feel much the same way that I did when I quit the fags, namely, deprogrammed from a lifetime's indoctrination by the food "police", food manufacturers and, worst of all, the diet industry. Diets! I have tried them all, with varying degrees of short-term success, but nothing has brought longer term stabilisation of my weight. This book might sound crackers in parts and the hypnotic, repetitive writing style can grate but that's all part of his trying to reverse the conditioning and beliefs of his readers. Mr Carr's distillation of his proposition into a few golden rules for life-long eating habits and redeveloping a love of good food in the quantities that work for you is, I believe, the only rational way forward. If changing my food habits is as enjoyable and permanent as giving up the weed then I can't wait to see what happens. DIETS DON'T WORK!

1 out of 5 stars Total and utter waste of money   October 17, 2006

If Mr. Carr is to be complemented on anything it is his ability to make money out of rubbish like this book. He said in 200 pages what he could have said in five words: "Eat vegetables and drink water." Seriously, that's all there is to absorb from this book - the rest is just repetition to an extent that is beyond belief. I would also be careful in taking his advice especially when the reader is suffering from diabetes (see one of the posts below).

If you really want to lose weight the first thing to do is to come to terms with the fact that there is no such thing as an easy way. You have to make sacrifices. Once you psyche yourself up and prepare for the worst, the rest is slightly easier. For those of you who are interested in some advice, I am currently trying to slim down from 103 kgs (16st 2lb) to 78 kgs (12st 4lb). So far I've managed to lose 13 kgs (2st 1lb) by removing the following from my diet:

1) sugar and (preferably) anything containing sugar;
2) bread and (preferably) anything containing yeast;
3) alcohol.

You have no idea what an enormous effect cutting alcohol had in my case. As for the rest, I have kept my diet as before.

Good luck!!

4 out of 5 stars the long(ish) term view   September 5, 2006

this book (unlike the smoking book)doesn't solve the problem of weight straight away-rather it seems to bring about a long term gradual change in your relationship with food which can take many months or years to become established..however looking back now this book has definately had such an effect on me and i realise my tastes in food have changed quite dramatically but without any feeling of being deprived.for me a snowball effect has occurred.and i now eat much more fruit and alot less meat and feel i have found a very nice balance.(however i also excercise regularly(and did for about 2 years before reading this).my advice is to get this book and read it and take in what you want when you want.for me it's being worthwhile-it just takes a long time to put into practice and it's best done very very gradually so as not to be a big shock your system (like a diet is).

1 out of 5 stars This Book Seriously Stinks   August 8, 2006

This book is terrible!! Its premise is that you can lose weight without dieting; Rather, by changing your perspective on food and what you eat. It uses NLP techniques to drill it's message home. Fine. It explains why over eating is like filling up a gas tank every week, regardless of the gas level in the car. Great. Then, it goes on to compare meat to putrid, rotting flesh and how we weren't meant to consume it. Wait a minute. And by the way, if you think you're okay by getting your protein from dairy or soy products, think again. Processed foods and dairy are Satan. And yes, you guessed it, sugar is slow suicide. Okay, well maybe I exaggerated about satan and sugar, but, basically, that's where the book directs your mind to take you. I think that is absolute crap! I would like to know where to get my protein from, and what to do when my blood sugar level spikes at 10:00 am after eating a bowl of fruit for breakfast? Personally, I'd rather implement a diet, or have a guideline of healthy food options to help me lose weight than read this brainwashy book that fails to give me realistic, healthy food choices, and considers eating a piece of chocolate to be as healthy as eating a turd! No thank you. Mr. Carr's methods may work for quitting smoking, but some people believe human beings actually need protein, and that chocolate, in small quantities can be a wonderful thing.
