Saddening August 1, 2004 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Doing the second world war in school, I decided to buy the diary of Anne Frank. Its an unmissable book. The fact that its a true story saddens me. It also made me laugh at some of Anne's thoughts and I enjoyed reading the entries where she went deep into thought and talked not just about the surface of life, but how she was beginning to find true self. Its such a great shame that this young girl never got to grow up and tell the tale through speech and not words. Its great that this diary was allowed for publication as it provides many readers, old and young, with an insight into the life of a hiding Jew.
Anne Frank: A beautiful Story July 31, 2004 A beautiful account of a young girls influencial life throughout the persecution of her own kind.Anne's courage and maturity is reflected within her at times humorous and intellectualy stimulating written style. This book is well worth a read, and should be followed up to a visit to the Anne Frank Huis in Amsterdam.
what an excellent read December 24, 2003 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book is an example to everyone. It is written by a Jewish girl, Anne Frank who went into hiding in a secret annexe during part of World War II. The diary was a present for her 13th birthday, before the Frank family went into hiding. Anne wrote in the diary not knowing that after the war it would be one of the most well read books ever published.Over the two years she lived in the secret hideaway, before they got found out about, Anne writes about the hardships they had to go through, especially living with other people, not just her mother, father and older sister. It tells of the arguements, the food rationings, the relationships and the worrying of being found out in the secret place, not knowing who to trust. It is a moving story which should be read by everyone to show how lucky we are. Even at the age of 10, when I read it first, I found it very interesting and moving.
Sad, but rewarding. July 27, 2003 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
Reading this book is both rewarding and sad, so prepare yourself your both. I'm less than half way through this book and I feel nothing but sadness that such a life was taken at such a young time in life. I wish I could express my feeling about this book in the same way Anne could express herself in her diary, but I don't possess such a talent, even though I'm twenty years her senior. Like most people, I know what Anne's destiny is, and I find some aspects of this diary very difficult to read, knowing what I do. I don't think I'm the only person alive that believes that the world is a poorer place without the talents of such gifted people like Anne, but we cant change the course of history, so lets hope we can learn the lesson of our past. I'm not the type for travelling, but this diary has inspired me to visit Anne's 'secret Annex' to see first hand the place where she lived in isolation for so long. I've read many books in my time, but none have touched my heart as this one has.
