Another Amazing Marian Masterpiece July 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
absolutely fantastic. have read most of marian's other novels and every time i finish one i say that was the best so far. they are utterly amazing and rachels holiday just carries on that legacy. truly heartfelt read, amazing written and researched. broke my heart at the end of this novel as i do at some point with all of marian's books. it was truly perfect and i would recommend it for anyone! i love the story of all the walsh girls and really want one for helen! marian is a legend and will appeal to everyone. amazing!
Repetitive and sloooooooooooooooooooow. July 17, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the first Marian Keyes book I have read and picked it due to the great reviews. I didn't find the book as enjoyable as a lot of people.
The story was slow to develop and rather repetitive. I don't think it needed the 500 pages plus and could have been told in half that. There are a few dozen characters, many of whom were potentially interesting but were not developed so you never really got to understand anyone except the protagonist, Rachel.
I thought the story was completely predictable and at times I was completely frustrated by the lack of action/plot. I thought the writing was humorous in places but mostly in the Christmas cracker joke/grimace way rather than laugh out loud.
I'm not sure I would read another book by the same author.
Brilliant, fantastic, wonderful, funny, interesting and very realistic. !!! July 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I cannot tell how much I enjoyed this book, I have forced many people to read it as a self - help book as it makes a lot of sense and says all the right things, the main character "Rachel" is the best of all Keyes books, perhapes that is because there is a lot of Marian's own experience written into the story, it made me laugh and it made me think about how completely unaware we can all be about what we are doing and the consequences of our own actions, I read this book in 2 days, it would have been quicker if I had been able to take the day off work to read it which I did think about doing as I loved this book soooooooooooo much right from the first couple of pages .
My fave book May 30, 2008 I agree this is inspirational. I laughed out loud through the chapters and cried too. I also was at a difficult point in life and this helped me through it, it's a book that highlights the humour in even the most unpleasant situations. I've read this about 7 times and if ever I feel a bit low, I pick it up...... Thank you Marion.
Reliable Marian! May 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Marian's classic easy-to-read comical style comes through in this book, and I enjoyed it a lot. I've read lots of Marian's books but I love the Walsh family collection the most. I will never tire of reading about Mam Walsh and Helen...(come on Marian, where's Helen's book?)
However, it did lose a star for me because I thought the book was a bit repetitive at times and Rachel's predictable and eventual realisation that she had a problem seemed to take forever. The characters in this book are too numerous - and sadly this meant that you didn't really get to know any of them well enough (or care about them)...Don, Barry, Neil, Mike etc etc. And whilst this doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the book - I think Marian missed a trick here. Still great fun, easy read and a page-turner. I would recommend to a friend - or you for that matter! :-)
