Where's the Sequel! November 27, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Its about time our protagonist is an attractive, 30+, size 16, with kids! I loved Clara, she was believable and made me laugh so much it was like I had a new friend. Clara is a real cheer leader, she reminds us all that life isn't over cause you have a few extra inches around the waist and haven't bought a new lippy in a while (because you've been too busy juggling toddler and career). She gives out hope that a woman can re-invent herself, and really love herself in process, and worst case scenario, when all else fails...."how would Madonna deal with it"? It was sad to finish the book, I wanted it to go on and on.
What a fabulous book November 6, 2003 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
If you like humorous, modern novels, 'My Life On a Plate' will be right up your street. India Knight tells a compelling, funny story which remains unpredictable. The main character is a housewife named Clara Hutt, which reminds her of "Jabba the Hutt -" and allows her to wallow in self-pity once in a while. This is a very easy to read book, which deals with the day to day life of Clara Hutt. Clara has a nice house, two cute children and a part-time job. This is in reality an ordinary tale of most women who feel they are stuck in a rut, who want more from their lives and spend time feeling paranoid about getting larger and very much less sexy. The book has some great parts, which almost made me weep with laughter. For instance, when after spending a harassing morning getting kids ready for school, she arrives at the school gate without realising she still has her pyjama bottoms on. Or the time when she goes to a salon to have a facial and Bikini wax and cant continue the pain of the wax leaving the salon with a half done wonky bikini like, and some other anecdotes which may make you step back and examine your own lifestyle. Clara has a wide variety of friends from an anorexic perfectionist to a one night stand wonder, each of her friends are very important to her and each signify what she wants to be or what she is. This has to be one of the best books I have ever read. Since buying it last year I have read it countless times. It is a heart warming book, written with such honesty and is a good reflection of real life as any 'normal' person sees it. It is ridiculously funny and I still laugh out loud. With the mention of such characters as 'Mr.WeenyPeeny'. Clara is a "smug married." However, there's always a downside and Clara's not-so-perfect life consists of carting her boys to and from school, giving her a chance to see how the truly flawless mothers exist. Trying to decide after eight years of marriage, whether her mysterious husband actually exercises his bodily functions or not, and of course her eccentric family which consists of a thin, beautiful, insane mother and a string of ex-step-fathers, plus ex-step-siblings. Clara and her husband have been married for 8 years and although they share 2 children, a house, love for each other and a very outstretched family they still don't seem to be satisfied with each other (as Clara soon finds out). I would without a doubt recommend this book to 14 years and older, but I think people ages between 30 + 40 would benefit from it the most as it is more relevant to them and they have more of an experience of the way she is living. I would give this book 10/10 for its cringing comedy and true to life story line.
This is me! July 2, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is excellent, right from the beginning you feel yourself smirking at the recognisable things that we all do but don't admit to!! I laughed out loud several times and I feel sure that anyone who reads this will do the same. There were also parts where I could have cried out loud too but purely because I could identify so strongly with the main character and I feel most mum's will understand what i mean once they have read the book..All my friends are queing to read this highly amusing, down to earth, real life look at life.
Chuckle to myself. May 21, 2003 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I just want to say what a wonderfully funny book this is. I have never read a book and laughed out loud on the train on my way to work. I think it was the fact that most of us women can seriously relate to this. I loved it, I am so sad to finish it, I feel like I know the characters. Desperate to find another book to replace it. On to her other book now, My Life on a Plate.
A Must Read For everyone! September 12, 2002 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is the best book I have ever read! Since buying it two years ago, I have read it countless times! With the mention of such characters as 'Mr.Weeny Peeny' how could anyone with a sense of humour fail to?!The main character, clara, is the ripe 16, strawberry jam stained pjarma bottoms on the school run, tipsy when performing an interview, wonky bikini wax getting, eating disorder friend having, marvel that totally makes the book! Calling anyone who fancies a laugh, you need this book!
