A fabulous read - I couldn't put it down. April 12, 2002 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
This book starts off on a high and continues upwards. It made me laugh and cry. It is so realistic, as you are reading different parts you can identify with Clara. It is so like real life. Both a sad and happy ending. Would recommend it to anyone.
My life in this book October 18, 2001 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
What I loved about this book was sitting there nodding at nearly every single page going "yes, yup, been there" etc. India Knight conjurs up a world of juggling children, work and trying to get the man you love to look at you, let alone even trying to talk to you! She does it with humour and also with tinges of sadness. Her acute observations are really key. Loved it. Lent it to all my friends who all felt exactly the same way. Maybe we all need to find a sexy Irish male ballet dancer somewhere!
Poorly written, ill thought out, most ideas are stolen. October 8, 2001 4 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is one of the most dull, tedious and unimaginative books I have had the misfortune to read in a very long time. I persisted in reading the whole thing so at least I can slate it off knowing what it's all abou... Admittedly, I am a lot younger than the women this book is aimed at (I am assuming this book is targeting those in their 30s or 40s) so the desperation and despair of childbearing and raising hasn't had a chance to hit me yet - it's mostly a nice novelty. I suppose it doesn't help that I am also familiar with the author's columns in the Times (Polly Filler, as she is so neatly satirized in Private Eye). There is just no story to speak of and the characters are as flat as an iron base. I would rate this as zero stars but Amazon does not allow this facility.
Very well written with poor storyline September 10, 2001 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was disappointed with this book as the first five pages had me believing I was on to a winner. India Knight is an excellent writer, especially funny and found myself laughing out loud several times. But the story-line was hopeless, characters very one dimensional and the ending was dire. I couldn't believe how rushed the last 20 pages or so were and how cliche the ending was. It was almost as if the author had not planned the story before she began writing and quickly came up with something for the end. India Knight is an extremely talented writer, it was a shame about this one!
FANTASTIC August 31, 2001 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is amazing I'm only a teenager but I loved it. I felt sorry for Clara in Paris. But the book made me laugh out loud most of the time. Clara would always get straight to the point and not faff around. The swearing didn't put me off it just made the book funnier. I LOVE THIS BOOK I can't wait for more books by India Knight she is a fantastic writer.
