2 out of 5 stars Disappointing!!   November 10, 2006

I usually love Nick Hornby's books - I have read About A Boy and How To Be Good several times so was really pleased to find that he had released his latest novel. However I found the book really hard to get into - the concept of the four characters meeting on the top of the car park was good but unfortunately the characters were either all unlikable or forgetable. The book lurched about all over the place and certainly wasn't difficult to put down. It felt an anti-climax when I had eventually finished the book and it's not one I would bother to read again.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing read!   October 30, 2006

This is by far the best book I've read in recent years. The text is engaging, touching and thought-provoking. This book sparked my interest in Hornby's work being the first book by the author I'd read so I cannot really compare it to the rest, but it was amazing in its own right.

4 out of 5 stars What a gem!   October 1, 2006

I was doubtful at first, seen as I am into thrillers, but what a read this was. I found it very humerous and was often chuckling to myself. The types of characters are just like people I know which added the extra laugh. I think everyone knows a Jess or two!!! I really recomend this read, especially if you are looking for a change. I couldn't put it down after the first chapter for I was gripped by what was going to happen next.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I'd expected....   September 15, 2006

Given the prelaunch hype in the press, I though that this was going to be a thoughtful yet amusing "four people stuck in a lift" turmoil - relationship - awakening type story.
Unfortunately - for me a least - the characters come off the roof within 20 pages of having gone up there, and from there, whilst not being a bad read, there was little to make the story or writing particularly exceptional.

I did enjoy it - although would not class it as a comedy - I think I only managed to irritate my other half when reading in bed by sniggering about three times.

Generally well written, I liked the characters (even Jess), but not the thoughtful engaging read that I was anticipating.

3 out of 5 stars Odd but worth reading   August 28, 2006

I found this a very strange read. The claim in the blurb that it was 'hilarious' seemed totally at odds (excuse the pun) with the subject matter, but never mind... I still think it was worth reading; i laughed out loud once, and Maureen's character made me cry on more than one occasion, but the character of Jess just annoyed me, it was such an exaggerated portrayal of a teenage girl. We're not all like that you know!
