Excellent May 20, 2003 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
Excellent book - the only thing I dislike about Wilde is that some of his books are just an excuse for him to use his one-liners. Read it!
Best in the world! May 10, 2003 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I agree with both reviews, it is better on stage, as I have recently found out, but to read the play can be rewarding as you can read it as many times as you want! I am now studing "Earest" for A-level theatre studies because it was so funny, witty and ironic, which we found could be brought out very well on stage. Read the play and you will find out how good it really is.
A refreshingly interesting read at A-level July 4, 2001 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
I am currently studying The Importance of Being Earnest for my English Literature A-level and I can honestly say it is the best piece of writing I have studied so far. Funny, ironic and completely truthful, this play is based on people's behaviour, especially the behaviour of the aristocracy, which is, at times, nothing short of stupid, but that's where the humour lies. The play is fairly short, (A-level students everywhere heave a sigh of relief) but this doesn't prevent it from being complicated- those who have trouble remembering names might like to steer clear (at one point, two people claim to be the same person, even though this person doesn't exist). However, this doesn't make the play particularly difficult; once you have established the plot, it falls into place. A word of warning: if you have no sense of humour you will find this play a bore. For the rest of us, though, it's a highly enjoyable read.
Fantastic, one of Wilde's finest works. September 9, 1999 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Although in book form this is a witty and fantastic play it realy has to be seen in the theatre to be truly appreciated. And by golly when you see it you will know what I mean!
