beautifully written book October 19, 2005 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I didn't realise it was a short story collection until I got to what was the end of the first story. I wouldn't have bought the book if I had known and yet I would have deprived myself of a really good and unusual read. There was a definite "thread" running through the stories but each was quite different. Well worth a read, thought-provoking and unique!
a wonderful collection of short stories October 7, 2005 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Each of the nine stories in this collection is captivating. Orringer has managed to write the most evocative stories with a true voice. The depth of feelings - grief, despair, spite, bitterness and vulnerability (amongst others) and her ability to develop her characters and make them three dimensional so quickly, are what makes these stories so powerful. She has the lightest touch and a great eye for detail. You can't help but get involved with the characters in each story, which for me is unusual in short stories, which often leave me feeling short changed. This book is a gem and I would highly recommend it.
Enjoyable September 5, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
These short stories were a really enjoyable read. All the stories focus on childhood and growing up, with issues like illness, friendship and grief. The characters in each story are interesting and well written. It's really quick to read as well.
Enchanting and moving July 20, 2005 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is such a well written book and one of the best I've read for a while. There are elements in each story that reach out and remind you how funny, sweet, embarrassing and also painful growing up can be.
a thing of rare beauty July 1, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
What an utterly sweet and completely involving book this is. The kind of book that makes you feel 7 or 10 or 14 years old again. The kind of book that brings your own childhood racing back because that kind of confused innocence is the same whether you're a jewish girl in New Orleans or a catholic boy in Ireland. The writing is simple but so evocative the stories already feel like actual events rather than someone else's fiction. It's 9 stories you'll want to share with your favourite people, and you'll wish you'd written them because you could have. This kind of stuff happened to everyone. I loved this book, it made me smile and broke my heart and if you've half a soul you're gonna love it too.
