Higher intelligence need not apply June 11, 2006 60 out of 69 found this review helpful
For anyone not inclined to read a book on science, or a book on theology or even a book that is somehow controversial, then I implore you to break your traditions just once and indulge in this book - as it covers all of the above, and more. This author's view is that there is no God, but that biology and scientific reasoning can still reveal nature's true beauty: by uncovering its greatest mysteries. But don't be put off by the biology. Dawkins tackles these subjects in such a way that anyone can understand them, without being patronising and all the while keeping you thoroughly interested. You don't need to be a brain-box.
So buy this book, and be amazed. You won't look at the natural world in the same way ever again.
A good read - expecially if paired with other books February 24, 2006 6 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have a long standing interest in Evolution and was handed a copy of this book by a colleague. It was a good and interesting read and well worthwhile. The book is very approachable and Dawkins does a good job of explaining the key principles of evolution. I would like to be more positive about the book but in a few places Dawkins seems to skip unhelpful facts or make assumptions that are known to be somewhat speculative. Hence, to me the book did not seem to be balanced and fair. Personally – I would read this book along with “Evolution: A theory in Crisis – Michael Denton” as a pair to get a more balanced view. If read as a pair, I would rate the book highly as a good way to get your head round the full spectrum of evolutionary thinking.
Stunninly Brilliant! February 9, 2006 4 out of 11 found this review helpful
Richard Dawkins simply has to be the most important writer on Evolution since Darwin himself. This book is quite brilliant. It's one of those books that everyone should read. At times, I wanted to run down the street, to find people I could read passages to! His knowledge is truly boundless. Ian Sharp
The classic popular work on evolution August 13, 2005 14 out of 20 found this review helpful
A brilliant and interesting book. Most of us know what evolution is but only vaguely. You will be fascinated to learn just how much thought has been applied to the subject since Darwin unleashed it onto an unsuspecting world all those years ago. Obviously religious fundamentalists who still believe the earth was made in 6 days are not going to like it but then they have their own (old) books to read.
the meaning of life May 27, 2005 12 out of 28 found this review helpful
firstly people with 1 star reviews, have u actually read the book? if you have you have to ask yourself, did you understand it? and did you read it with a open mind or already made your opinion before you started to read the book? This is a very convincing argument for evolution and makes mockery of those who oppose it, evolution simply exists, its like global warming you have to accept it the evidence is there, to ignore it is to be ignorant of the truth. bible bashings wackos should realise their faith is based upon insecurities and a emptiness that exists because of our own self awareness, we need to find a reason to be alive. it is easy to say god created everything becuase it is so simple, real faith and dediction lies in scientists like Darwin and Dawkins actually studying the world we live in and finding meaning and method in madness. stop being ignorant fools, open your minds, and realise this book is excellent.
