Sorry but did not work for me July 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have wanted to give up for ages but tried everything. Someone suggested this book and the reviews are good, so I thought i would try it. I first read the Womens edition and I did this with a positive frame of mind. Good book, he makes some good points, but sorry, it did not work for me. So I tried the normal edition, I read it half way through and just knew it was not going to work for me either. I think it is great that it has helped so many people, and Allen Carr makes some good points, BUT I found it to be annoying, preachy and patronising. I was going to go to one of the Allen Carr group sessions (which use a small dose of Hypnotherapy at the end)these cost 220, but you can get 2 hours with a Hypnotherapist for that. I understand that Allen Carr actually gave up using Hypnotherapy! I decided that I would try this route for myself. So I made sure that i found a really good Hynotherapist, and I have been a non smoker for a week now!!!!! brilliant, no cravings,no agony, its so easy and it works! I cant believe that I gave up so easily after smoking for 25 years. AMAZING!
I wish I had done this years ago.
Just like Magic! July 5, 2008 I have smoked for 25 years and tried everything to stop - hypnotherapy, patches, tablets, willpower. Nothing worked. It always felt as though I was being forced to give up something I enjoyed. I had read Allen's book once before, but still felt as though I was missing out on something, so I started smoking again. A few weeks ago I was thinking about my dad and how he died from a smoking related disease and wished I could just stop, like that. I was clearing out a cupboard and found my old copy of Allen's book. I decided to just take my time reading it again, if only to work out why it didn't work for me. By the end of the book, I just didn't want to smoke anymore. I no longer felt that I was missing out on anything, rather the opposite. I no longer wanted to stand out in the cold and the rain in order to have a fag. And the feeling of freedom was amazing! Stopping smoking doesn't make you a different person - actually, stike that, yes it does - it makes you a better person. You no longer feel a slave to cigarettes and you no longer have that little voice in the back of your mind telling you that there is a strong possibility that you will die of a smoking related disease. It really is a feeling of being free. try it. What have you got to lose? You can always smoke again if you really want to, but I doubt you will.
the world can't thank Mr Carr enough July 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have smoked for 13 years 5-10 cigarettes a day. In the last few years I have contemplated quitting, but never felt I could do it. I knew that I wouldn't last quitting only with will power, I definitely didn't believe in the NRT. I stumbled across a recommendation of this book on an internet forum and thought, that this might be it. I will try. Went to the book shop immediately, got the book, read it in about 10 days - slowly and carefully, and quit. That was three months ago. And I know I won't smoke again ever in my life. Mr Carr developed a very clever, kind and unpatronising method and in my opinion he needs a posthumous Nobel Prize for what he has done for millions of people so far and what he will keep on doing for millions of people in the future. My boyfriend quit as well, 3 weeks after me and is a very happy non-smoker. Mr Carr RIP.
if you're serious about giving up smoking, you MUST read this book June 28, 2008 I have smoked for 14 years - I am 37. I have tried everything to give up - cold turkey, hypnotherapy, chinese medicine, all new health regimes, and nothing came close to truly freeing me from 'missing/wanting/needing' ciggis.Unitl this book. It is soooo weird. I just don't want to smoke any more, and it is truly great. All you need is to really really want to give up. I read the book over four days, smoking always as i read, and believe me, by the time i had come to the final chapter, I couldnt wait to stubb the ciggi out and get on with my new life. Go for it - what have you got to lose?
It worked for me June 19, 2008 Before buying this book, you really need to ask yourself if your ready to quit smoking forever. If your not, save your money and go buy another pack of cigarettes. Do not waste money buying this book for someone else, it has to be the smokers decision.
I was more than ready to quit, I read the book, I'm now a happy non-smoker. I will NEVER smoke again.
I'll credit 50% to the book, 50% to my own shear willingness to stop smoking forever. However, without the book I doubt I would have succeded.
The best AU$26 I've ever spent, it's added years to my life and saved me thousands.
If your ready to "Give up" then your ready for this book. It Definately works.
Yes I agree, there is a lot of repetitiveness in the book but I fully believe this is the key to the whole "De-programming" method that Allen prescribes. Smoke away, read the book, stop forever. RIP Allen, my kids will know me longer.
Paul.
