2 out of 5 stars did not work for me   June 9, 2008
I bought this book on the back of all the wonderful reviews i read on Amazon. I did as Mr Carr instructed and kept smoking until i finished the book. And kept smoking. I can see how this book works as it very subtley suggests that you are free from smoking. If you look closely, a lot of key phrases are repeated throughout the book, reinforcing the idea that you are a non smoker. However, it did not work for me. I think you need to really want to kick the habit before you read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Try it, you'll be suprised!!! :))   May 31, 2008

I brought this book, NOT having the highest of hopes of it working!! And having such a negative attitude towards this book from the beginning, how could it possibly work??!! I thought I enjoyed smoking, I really did..Infact, thinking back, in the beginning, when I brought the book, I think I was actually scared that it may work and I actually would give up!! What would I do without the smoking? Its always been there for me through thick and thin?? Smoking was my best friend!!
But then I read this book..It doesn't tell you anything that you don't already know..there isn't any surprises..it's a very simple method..although, I have to admit, I couldn't actually tell you what the method is or how the method works! I can only tell you that whatever the method is, it has worked for me!!!! I smoked 20 cigs a day for 16yrs..
I read this book and I haven't smoked since!! How great is that?? How easy is that?? Give it a try..You have nothing to lose..I have been smoke free for over a month, and haven't been tempted to have a crafty puff at all..I am proud, of myself for becoming a non smoker, and of Allen Carr, who made what we feel is the hardest thing to give up, into the easiest thing to give up!!! ;)

1 out of 5 stars Didn't Do It For Me   May 31, 2008
I also must be in the 10 percent that this doesn't work for. I've actually bought this and the audio version, I've listened to the audio version 3 times and read the book once and I'm still smoking, and I do want to give up but this doesn't do it for me

5 out of 5 stars it really was very easy.....over three months now   May 23, 2008

I was smoking about 40 a day. The first one immediately on getting up and the last before going to bed. Being in non smoking restaurants was purgatory for me. The last few times I tried to give up I lasted a few days or even three weeks once but had to fight and fight the cravings.

I sat with my six year old nephew one afternoon over three months ago and he commented that I smelt of cigarettes. That was the turning point. I thought of him and my two year old grandson and how horrid that must be when I cuddle them.

I stopped a few days later and read Allen's book from cover to cover that night. I threw away four packs of tobacco, several brand new lighters, including my favourite one with the penguin on it. I poured water over the tobacco to make sure! I kept away from smokers for a few days. I had a few urges that passed really quickly.

I dream quite often that I have started again and its so great to wake up And find out that's not true! One thing is I have realised that I liked 'being' a smoker...I felt younger, like a rebel in te bike sheds at school or something. There was definitely a part of me that wanted to stay a smoker. I knew when I stopped that I would be fighting that little voice saying 'Oh you don't mind spending the money...it suits you to smoke....its not the right time....' and talking me out of my decision. It has tried but I'm not listening.

The image I like best is to think of my clean lungs...or at least much cleaner ....and also my blood circulating better day by day.

5 out of 5 stars It worked, at first.. then relapsed and now smoking again   May 17, 2008
This is the third book I bought for my boyfriend to help him quit his 30 cigarettes a day habit. He was using nicotine patches, then the day he finished reading the book, he walked in the room with a smile and almost an aura around his head. He said he finally understood, he doesn't need cigarettes, they give him nothing and that he has finally got it in his head. From then on, he didn't even need the nicotine patches anymore. He was a bona fide NON-SMOKER for 2 months. All his friends and colleagues are smokers, they all taunt him and he gave in, he smoked one cigarette, that was 2 months ago. He has been smoking again ever since. He only smokes 2 cigarettes a day (after lunch and dinner) but according to the book, there is no such thing as the 'occasional smoker', because that way you are always at risk. He started re-reading the book again, but lost interest. He thinks it is good enough that he is only smoking 2 day, even though he CAN smoke ZERO cigarettes a day and has done it. I still believe Allen Carr's book to be very effective, I have heard people say if this book doesn't work, nothing would.
