A word of warning September 24, 2004 70 out of 79 found this review helpful
This book in my opinion is only for those with small problems or who can work though this book with a therapist. It does advise this in the book. For me it bought up overwhelming feelings from my childhood and pain that left me unable to function. Whilst if you can apply the skills suggested in the book i think it can help your life if you have trouble coping with your past do not use this book alone
It really does help! February 17, 2004 61 out of 62 found this review helpful
I have read other self-help books before but none like this. It really has helped me! It has helped me to understand why I behave in certain ways and gives practical, realistic advice about how I can change. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't provide miraculous solutions to all my difficulties, but it has certainly given me hope for the future. Easy to read as well - I picked the chapters that were most relevant to me and read those first. I hope that other people benefit from this book too - thanks to the authors.
More sensible than most self-help books July 9, 2001 57 out of 60 found this review helpful
This book gives advice on understanding and self-help for some of the more common problems or "hang-ups" from which most people are likely to suffer. The discussion is eclectic and generally avoids psychobabble. Although (hopefully) not all of the "lifetraps" discussed will be relevant to everyone, the book is excellent value, and much cheaper than a course of psychoanalysis. Most people reading and acting upon this book will find greater fulfilment and will be better adjusted.
one of the best self help books April 24, 2001 44 out of 45 found this review helpful
This is an important book to deal with common self defeating patterns in life.It takes a compassionate view of personality dysfunctions andcreates the hope that things can be changed. It does not offer easy answers and it is obvious that one has to work hard to effect changes. To the motivated it gives a key to work on their problems. It is good value for money and I will strongly recommend it.The self questionnaires are thankfully short but comprehensive. The lay out could be improved for easy readability:there are too many fonts and tables distracting the flow of main text.
It has helped me do exactly what the title says !! October 29, 1999 64 out of 66 found this review helpful
This is a book for anyone who finds themselves falling into the same life traps time after time after time. We are all told that we learn by our mistakes, but so often we don't. How often have we heard ourselves, or someone else saying "why do I always make the same mistakes, particularly in relationships?, why do I always seem to go for the same type of person? why is the outcome always the same?", well, if you can hear yourself or others saying those words, this book is for you, and will help you to see through the emotional, subconcious fog that stops you from becoming the person you know exists deep down inside waiting to see the light of day. Everyone should read this book.
