Excellent book; questionable diet September 5, 2007 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is a really good read; humorous, entertaining, witty and warm. I can totally relate to India and Neris having struggled to keep my weight down for most of my 46 years. The book is honest, no-nonsense and very, very motivational and delves into the reasons why you got fat / stay fat in the first place.
Now the diet. I am nine days into the diet and so far I have lost 3lbs. I have followed the instructions to the letter, keeping my carbs at around 22-25 grams a day and taking my supplements and drinking gallons of water. Although I am happy to be losing weight, I certainly didn't experience the dramatic weight drop promised in the first week, nor did I experience all the adverse symptoms described; headaches, bad breath, tiredness etc. I actually feel quite well, although I am a bit concerned about the gigantic amounts of fat I seem to be eating. I do strongly suspect that the weight loss has come more from the restriction in calories (I am averaging about 1200 a day) than the reduction in carbs.
I would recommend the book heartily if you want motivation; this is the first diet I've been on where I've never cheated once (yet!) and the comments from India and Neris feel as though they are aimed at the reader personally, which is like listening to sound advice from a good friend. However, the diet is just like any other diet - it WILL work, but only if you stick to it rigidly.
Good for pep talks and a helping hand September 3, 2007 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I would recommend this book- BUT!- and it's a big but- buy another low-carb recipe book along with it. This is a guide, a handbook, really it's a DIARY. There are few recipes in here, and without a back-up book for ideas you might be disappointed. I recommend Fran McCullough's "The Low-Carb Cookbook" (excellent for ideas and explanations, tons of recipes, though the measurements are USA).
There are plenty of low-carb recipes online, so if you can't afford more than this one book today, buy it, then look for recipes to copy off the net till you get into the swing of things.
This book is a diary of two funny, strong women setting out to lose weight by eating low-carb/high protein. They explain how it works and go over the basics of *why* it works. But essentially it is a pep-talk in hardback. Curl up in bed with a cup of tea and read it whenever you have lost the oomph to carry on with your diet. It's very helpful.
finally a diet which lets you eat well August 16, 2007 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I came in to this diet and book hoping to lose 2 1/2 stone for my wedding next year, 6 weeks on I have lost just under a stone and feel great, with better skin and more energy. It won't work for everyone, you have to be prepared to give up bread, potatoes, crisps and all junk..including diet coke, but the results are worth it. Thank you India and Neris for allowing me to eat good healthy food and to re discover my love of cooking again.
It works for me August 5, 2007 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
Loosing weight is not about making one decision to do the right thing, but 1000s of decisions that all finally result in wieght loss. This book has been invaluable to me in the last few months to keep me on track, motivated, and slimmer. I have been roughly following this diet for 4 months and I have just bought my first size 16 jeans after coming down from size 22. Two more sizes to go.
This is not a particularly prescriptive diet, more a set of sensible guidelines, and a whole lot of very good head stuff. As the authors say, most diets work, it is a matter of finding a way of eating that sits well with you. The first two weeks menus are set out for you as a way of re calibrating yourself off sugar, booze, caffeine. The menues are just suggestions, there is nothing stopping anyone taking the guidelines and running in their own prefered direction.
A few months in an I have happily tweaked things more in my direction. I eat out a lot, so a way of eating that takes this into account is very welcome. I keep an eye on portions, stay absolutley away from junk, I am starting to enjoy exercise.
It is not the cheapest way to be. But some advice has been crucial. In getting a new stash of make up, some better flattering clothes, a better haircut, treating yourself makes you feel special enough to warrant loosing wieght. "you might be fat, but you could also do with a new hair cut and some fresh mascara" Basically love yourself a bit more, value your body, and you will be less tempted to feed yourself crap. It might sound silly and obvious to the casual reader going through the reviews, but it was like an epifany to me.
Anyway, super stuff.
Didn't work for me July 15, 2007 10 out of 14 found this review helpful
I wasn't quite sure how to decide on the 'stars' to give this book because I loved reading it and really got in to the idea of the diet. I had read the Sunday Times articles and bought two copies of the book; one for me and one for my daughter. We both lost 5lbs during the first week (Great! Really encouraged!) but despite carrying on faithfully on the diet neither of us lost any more weight which was really disappointing. However, I don't blame Nerys and India (!) I guess it is just our metabolism!
