Very disappointing October 26, 2006 20 out of 21 found this review helpful
This book was extremely disappointing. As mentioned in another review, this is not written by Gillian McKeith, although it is supposed to be associated with the Channel 4 show. There are some good recipes in here if you are on a diet, and it is nicely laid out in seaons to make the best of 'in season' fresh produce in the recipes, however I would certainly not recomend this if you are trying to follow Gillian's approach. If you have done your first few weeks and are looking for something extra, then I would recommend the You Are What You Eat Cookbook which has loads of great recipes and ideas on how to put a meal together
If you are looking to buy this book, I'm thinking that you have probably heard Gillian's thoughts on certain types of food, however this book says things like 'In your sandwiches at lunchtime, try & use wholemeal bread, but if you can't.....' As white bread is one of Gillian's top 10 bad foods, it seems odd that this book seems to allow it. Lots of recipes contain ingredients that are not in keeping with the programme, so it was not what I was looking for, but it is nicely laid out and pictures are good. I would say don't buy if you are looking for extra You Are What You Eat recipes, but buy if you are following another plan where this might fit better
Not the Real McKeith March 24, 2006 39 out of 44 found this review helpful
I read the above reviews and looked at the book and it needs to be pointed out that THIS IS NOTHING TO DO WITH DR GILLIAN MCKEITH. It's written by a nutritionist on behalf of the company who make the TV series. Don't be fooled - a lot of the recipes in here are decidedly un-Gillian. This is no more than an exercise in cashing in.
Life isn't all mitso soup and quinoa March 3, 2006 78 out of 83 found this review helpful
Not being particularly attracted to slippery elm and dandelion tea as advocated by Gillian McKeith I found this book used foods that I and my family are more likely to eat on a sustained basis. Gillian's hard and fast rules are great for jolting the system when one is feeling motivated but there are some things that I will never get a taste for. Using this book in conjunction with the other You Are What You Eat publications provides an extensive range of recipes using food items that are, in the main, available in the local Spar. The energy bars are really delicious and easy and straightforward to make. There are also lots of good ideas for family meals together with puddings and treats when you just need something a little bit sinful.

Gillian McKeith gets a lot of stick from people who are sceptical of her methods. This book is yet another example of why she's always right. I have, together with many others, started on the road to healthier eating but never quite got there. To continue the analogy, there's always a McDonalds on route. Gillian McKeith recognises that sometimes we need leading by the nose, so she has developed a menu for each day of the week. Some of the stuff is a bit difficult to come by in Spar, but the frozen varieties can suffice if you're not fussy. I once met Gillian McKeith when I worked in the transport industry. 'Hi Gillian', I said. 'A single to Kelvingrove', she said. Anyway, another great contribution to the fat fight.
Simple progression to a healthier eating plan February 1, 2006 57 out of 60 found this review helpful
I have read many books on healthy eating plans and the one thing that stops me from succeeding is that I try to change too quickly doing too many new things. This book is arranged in a month by month guide starting in January with a look at how to improve after the Christmas excesses. It tackles a different subject each month, going through the year so that if you take on the concept each month, by the end of the year you will be surprised at how your diet has changed, almost without you knowing. It is not the definitive guide but a good gentle start to a better way of eating.
