1 out of 5 stars Common sense prevails   August 27, 2004

I am an experienced teaching assistant, now moving on to train as a primary school teacher. "Getting the buggers to behave" is a recommended text for my next terms' training. The book promised common sense solutions to managing pupil behaviour, and this is what it delivers, in the most repetitive way possible. The book insults my intelligence and assumes that I would never have thought of such simple "solutions" as "keep calm", "be positive" and "try not to shout" by myself. I have learned little from the book, other than how to phrase "keep calm" in a variety of different ways and how to wince at the sweeping generalisations the author employs to categorise all manner of students. This book is very light reading, very light on research and very light on positive advice.

5 out of 5 stars essential!   March 15, 2002

This book is fantastic! I really can't recommend it enough... Very easy to read with lots of practical examples to ground the theory. Sue genuinely understands the issues behind bad behaviour and seeks to address those. Some of her suggestions will be things you do anyway, but it is worth reading the book to really consolidate it in your head! Another thing I found refreshing was that she is not naive with pupils (eg you say come here to a pupil and they always do!) but she does explain how a certain attitude and consistency will always work ultimately (even if the child does not 'come here'.) Highly Highly Highly recommended... Thanks Sue :)

Year 7 getting you down? Year 10 driving you mad? This book is full of practical advice for getting the buggers to behave! Realistic strategies that really work - take it from me, I've tried them! Go on ... give them hell!

I am a student teacher and have found this book really interesting. It gave me ideas as to how to start off when I get my own class and also made me think of a few things that had never entered my mind before. Well worth the money.

Sue Cowley presents a behaviour management book for experienced teachers and NQTs alike. Working in a tough inner city school, I thought positive behaviour management would never work, but I was proved wrong! Cowley's engaging and 'jargon free' style makes this an interesting read, and the tips, simple as they seem at first glance, have certainly sorted out 'those unmanageable year 9's on Friday period 5'!! A must have for anybody with a class they dread...
