Poor man's Leica? September 17, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
yes, it's really that good. I'm a news shooter and have done quite a few jobs with this camera. It also shoots pretty good video which is more in demand these days. No flip out screen like the old G5's ? but, Ive never had that. Too big to go clubbing with it is my main leisure camera too.
Great Design, Poor Quality Control September 11, 2008 10 out of 17 found this review helpful
Having finally decided to sell my antiquated and very heavy 35mm SLR and embrace the digital revolution, I decided to go for the Canon PowerShot G9 rather than a DSLR as it seemed to offer most of the flexibility and image quality of a DSLR in a relatevely lightweight and compact format. However, on receiving the camera, I noticed that there were two stuck pixels on the image sensor which appeared as bright red dots in every image and could also be seen on the display screen. I returned the camera to Amazon and requested a replacement but was astounded to find that this also contained stuck pixels, in this case two red and one blue, although only the blue pixel was visible on the display screen. I returned this one too but decided on a refund on this occasion as I'm not prepared to take the risk that the next example will also be defective.
This has been an extremely disappointing experience. All the reviews pointed to the G9 being one of the best ever examples of a compact digital camera and it certainly lived up to my expectations in terms of its classic design and overall build quality. However, I now realise that the problems that I experienced are not uncommon and there would appear to be a major quality control issue with this model. I still find it difficult to believe that such a highly respected manufacturer as Canon could allow this situation to arise. Could it be that the cameras are leaving the factory in perfect working order but are developing these faults during shipping? If this is the case, then it suggests that the number of stuck pixels could also rise over time...
Fortunately, Amazon's returns service has been faultless and the experience hasn't left me out of pocket. However, I'm now very wary of digital cameras and will be much more careful with my next choice of model!
Twice failed during key moment September 8, 2008 5 out of 15 found this review helpful
If you are happy to put up with a camera which could fail at any moment due to a loose connection, which is then subsequently repaired under warranty, then fails AGAIN, please, go ahead and buy this camera.
I am never buying canon again
Great value and better than an SLR for us. September 8, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This has been an excellent buy for us. We had toyed with the idea of buying a Digital SLR and had done all the research but read an article by a professional photographer who said that he used his SLR for work and a G9 all the rest of the time. It is easy to use and above all relatively compact. The electronic zoom is excellent. It may seem quite expensive but we think it is worth it
What no manual?! September 4, 2008 7 out of 19 found this review helpful
I bought this camera a week ago, I have no printer at home and I am *hugely annoyed* that the camera comes without a printed manual. You get a PDF manual on a disk only. Bearing in mind this manual is 270 pages long, it is unlikely I am going to pay for it it be printed in an internet cafe or a print shop.
I am going off travelling for a few months, am I supposed to lug my PC around whenever I go on a trek or up a mountain so I can refer to the manual?
Canon cite environmental concerns for not including the manual, but I don't believe that for a minute. It is another way they can make lots more money on added extras. They direct you to a third party website where you can buy a photocopied manual for about 15 or 20 pounds. What a joke.
