5 out of 5 stars Truly terrifying   October 29, 2007

Despite having almost comletely cured myself of superstition, this film still scares the hell out of me. I don't tend to go for films-of-a-certain-age. This one is a total exception.

It's methods appeal to the most primal part of the mind in creating its terrors. As others have said the 1999 "remake" is an effects led waste of time in comparison. For the best enjoyment of this film watch it on your own late at night.

Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars The Haunting (1963)   October 17, 2007

This is one of the most scariest, thought-provoking and original chillers to ever set foot in the film industry. Don't bother with the 1999 rehash, stick with this and you'll be in for a spine-tingling treat...

Starring Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson, Russ Tamblyn and Fay Compton and directed by a well-accomplished director Robert Wise (The Sound of Music, The West Side Story, The Day the Earth Stood Still), The Haunting tells the story of Dr John Markway (Johnson), a psychic researcher who brings along two mediums (Harris & Bloom) to help him investigate a extraordinary mansion that's thought to be haunted...

In this classic supernatural horror, you won't find any gore or blood as it plays entirely on terror that you can't actually see which is probably one of the most original of ideas seen in films like this. Robert Wise directs with such passion, such commitment that he can do no wrong, from pulsating doors to the classic spiral staircase scene, and his cast are picture-perfect as they try to uncover and eventually escape the terror of Hill House (I think that's what it's called) while the ending, to me, is truly a shocker!

You don't have to be a film critic to know that this is simply one of the greatest films ever made (among a whole lot of others) so add this to your collection!

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting and effective chiller   October 13, 2007

This is a particularly effective chiller from Robert Wise. The cast are all good and the setting superb. The film is all about atmosphere and suggestion (Anyone who has seen the West End production of 'The Woman In Black' will know what I mean).

We never really see what it is that stalks the rooms of the house but we feel it's pressence through the cast's reactions (one in particular) and through some very good camera work and lighting. There is a memorable scene when a door begins to buckle and at times there is almost a Hitchcock feel to the film.

The only drawback I have to the film is that the music is sometimes a bit too intrusive, indeed, the film is at its best when there is no soundtrack, and the narration of one of the characters does grate after a while. Otherwise an excellent, entertaining and original concept.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best scare you can get   July 22, 2007

Forget the age of this film. Forget Russ Tamblyn if you can. Forget, even, Valentine Dyall's teeth clenching American accent. This is truly the scariest movie you are ever likely to sit and watch. The sheer brilliance of it's shocks is that it is all in the mind. As the 90's re-make showed so clearly, no matter how good or expensive your CGI nasties are, your average human mind creates far better ones. 95% of the shocks and scares in this movie you don't actually see - you either hear them or they are inferred, the rest is left up to you and the film maker assumes the viewer is blessed with enough grey matter to work it out for themselves. Quite simply a chilling masterpiece.

i first seen this movie when i was five years old. and even now at 49 years old, it still gives me the creeps as much now as it did back then. the remake hasn't got a thing on the original. i still think that julie harris is a doll.
