Greatest FEEL GOOD movie of all time! April 12, 2006 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is the first time i ever saw John Cusack and i have been a great fan ever since. Maybe it looks a little dated to those of you who didnt grow up in the 80s, however, to me its still one of the greatest movies ever made and all will be. If your a fan of feel good movies, BUY IT! If your a John Cusack and havent seen this yet.......shame on you!!!
My favourite comedy of all time January 16, 2006 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Yes it's a 'college' movie. Yes there's a bikini-clad young lady on the cover (Nicolette Sheridan in a beautifully restrained, gorgeous airhead role). But this isn't just a college movie. Particularly as the film really only gets into its stride once it hits the open road. Daphne Zunige is a pre-Monica Geller, anal type, who's off to see her dull preppie boyfriend in L.A. John Cusack is 'Gib', a typical college freshman on his way to L.A. (where you can get a 'totally bitchin' education, dude') to see his friend Lance (Anthony Edwards, pre Top Gun), and hook up with the eponymous Sure Thing. The plot may be old hat, and the format hackneyed, but performances of sheer charm from Cusack and Zunige, together with great acting from a supporting cast that includes Tim Robbins in a cameo role as showtune-singing Gary make this a film everyone will love, however many times they watch it. Every scene is perfectly constructed, and Rob Reiner's script offers even more quotable gems than his earlier 'This is Spinal Tap'. Don't judge a film by its cover. Just watch it.
The Sure Thing October 30, 2005 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
Having seen it at the cinema on its' original release this film has remained my favourite ever. John Cusack is as superb then as he is now. Essentially this is a road movie with John travelling across country to meet his 'no strings attached, Sure Thing'. Unfortunately he is travelling with the prim and proper Daphne Zuniga and a brilliantly neurotic driver - a stellar performance by Tim Robbins - who can't take the couple's bickering and throws them out of the car in the middle of nowhere! The rest of the film involves the journey to California, the mishaps along the way and the burgeoning romance between the two main characters. It's a "laugh riot" that should be watched again and again because it gets funnier every time. Look out for a pre-ER Anthony Edwards as Cusack's best friend "Lance". I think I know it word perfect now, a must see for all John Cusack fans and those who just like a really good chuckle!!
A must have 80's classic September 9, 2005 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
This seems to be a film that gets overlooked whenever films from the 80's are mentioned but it really is a classic. John Cusack is as brilliant as ever and you will have fun spotting all the now well known actors who were then just starting out. It is a feelgood film, with the road trip madness and a good storyline, the characters are funny and well acted. A must for any fan of the 80's to add to their collection.
Feelgood and funny! August 6, 2005 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
Well it's been a long wait but finally 'The Sure Thing' makes it to Region 2 DVD. Perhaps this is in part due to the fact that it features Nicollette Sheridan of Desperate Housewives fame in the role of the eponymous 'sure thing'This is with out doubt one of the better romantic comedies of it era, the sort of film that you should reach for when browsing with your girlfriend in the local video store. Easy viewing, funny and feelgood. This film has largely slipped through the cracks and remains in my opinion a largely undiscovered gem.
