Bra-less but boring March 22, 2007 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
No doubt this film was doomed to live in the shadow of its predecessor, yet it is fair to say it lacks all that made the first film such an excellent watch. Caton-Jones has some skill, no doubt, but he has got it all wrong here: this is a well produced, slick film with beautiful imagery...and totally boring. Where the first Basic Instinct was sultry, dirty, twisted and nightmarish this one has a cold, orderly and well-behaved feel to it.
The polite British atmosphere amongst City of London psychiatrists could have been a powerful antidote to the insanity of the characters, but it just doesn't work. The sudden use of stark effects here and there just seems out of place, and actors acting completely out of character all the time makes the story even less believable. The nudity seems unnecessary and serves no purpose except, I suppose, to meet the expectations set out by the original. Rather than inspire revolt, excitement or lust, or a combination of these, the viewer is left puzzled, disappointed, even bored. I wouldn't have thought it possible to make an orgy scene that was simply uninteresting, but Caton-Jones manages just that.
And then there's Sharon Stone. I don't know whether the director told her so or whether she felt like doing a very different role this time, either way it's not good. We remember Catherine Tramell as a deadly, ever-seducing teaser. This time she's sour and spiteful, almost bitter. You're left wondering how a woman behaving like that can possibly manipulate anyone - it's just not credible, whether she flashes her tits or not. Morrissey's really good though, but there's only so much he can do (the second star is for him).
The plot, by the way, is extremely uninventive - more or less a copy of the first film, just relocated. Like last time, one attempts to create some uncertainty whether Tramell is the killer or not, but it's half-hearted bordering on pathetic; the alternative theory is so far-fetched you'll laugh out loud (cannot repeat it here as it would be a spoiler).
totally amazing March 21, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
when i first watched basic instinct number one, i was shocked inspired and mesmerised by the twisted fates of the chrarcters that were part of the prduction.
michael douglas left a very hard part to beat, his character was amazing in every way possible funny and sexily naive. so when david morrisey was asked to be michael glass i was pleasently happy. his acting skills impecable and maybe beat michael if i dare say!!!
as for ms sharon stone!! well where on earth does one start. the infamous leg crossing scene is what made her famous made her what she is today. she had a lot of hard work to do in this film to pull of a sequal after 14 year gap was ceratinly going to be hard. but by god she done it, this film showed she can get even more twisted in the head and more outragious. her departure from our screens was missed and i am very glad she is back. her acting skills showed she can actually keep her kit on and still potray sex in the greatest form. she made me laugh from time to time which is a relief from some of the sex thrillers of today. i raise my hands to her.
the film was slated for the lucricidy of it all. but sex does not have to be in your face and explicit the greatest sex is in the mind. i was throughly disapointed with some peoples reveiws about how she did not bare all enough, she left more to the imagination which is fantastic as i sure dont want my big screens turned into some porno movie, just ruins the mind and leaves you with less to think about.
i honour this film as it was shot in london and showed two very different sides to the capital the old buildings and the new ones, and i was impressed that they did not put in a red double deacker or a police man. i thank god they did not as there is more to the city than that.
hats of the directors and everyone involved with the movie i was excited when i heard it was coming out now i have watched it i cant get enough.
role on number three come on trammel become even more twisted than you already are.
nothing instinctive about it January 31, 2007 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
basically your instincts should tell you that formula moviemaking is inherently, innately, intuitively a bad idea. With this one, it looks like moviemakers sat around a table one afternoon (my guess is that's all the time it took) and devised their story using the 'what if' device solely. And in this what if world, plausibility does not matter; plot does not matter; and characters are there simply as vehicles for the 'what if' scenarios. The complete and total lack of intelligence in this film allowed you to become strangely drawn into much more probing questions such as -- was that Sharon Stone in every scene or an impressive double ?? Or better yet, digital enhancement ?? And why is it that in some scenes she seems more herself and yet in others ... ??? Lastly, whoever was in those scenes. over-vamping does not a good movie make.
Basic Instinct 2 VS the Media January 9, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Admittedley, i havent actually seen 'Basic Instinct 1' so if the negative reviews in the press are mearley comparing it to that, then i am in no position to comment. what i will say though, is that having been given this DVD at Christmas, i was pleasently suprised: Set and filmed entirley on Location in London (and the Royal holloway university in Egham!) i found this tense thriller fantastic. Apparantly the same as in Basic Instinct 1, Stone plays Catherine Trammell, the crime novellist whos stories have a habbit of becoming reality- and after a rather... Er-hem 'insteresting' car crash resulting in Tramell up against a murder charge for her footballer boyfriend's death, we learn that she is addicted to Risk. All im going to say is that personally i found the film enjoyable, and i thought that the storyline was actually (contrary to the critics) very well written and put together, and was a great film to watch... The 'twist/resoloution' at the end still leaves you wondering 'who did it' and wanting more. If you are undecided about this film, the best thing i could say is to give it a shot- ignore the media - they are like sheep and copy eachother! Judge for your self! I thought it was great!
Calculating, Exciting, Scary, Sexy Thriller December 14, 2006 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I thought this was very good and could relate to Basic Instinct 1 with the same type of music in the background and Sharon Stone looking utterly AMAZING AND VERY SEXY. She plays the role perfectly. It is also a very sexy film bringing about issue's that you think about a lot in life but are too frightened to do. All in all well worth purchasing and watching. I found the end scene very satisfying.
