Interesting... November 13, 2008 An interesting one this. I found it a very different style of writing, with two people in the first tense. Whilst the ending was predictable it was still very moving.
At the beginning it took a while to get into due to the constant chopping and changing of Henry's time travelling, but this in a way gives you an insight into the characters way of life.
The detail in areas such as Claire's art work I felt was sometimes uneccessary along with the random sections of french and german text. If you don't speak the language whats the point?
I was reading this as part of my works book club, and if Im honest Im not sure I would have stuck with it to the end if it hadnt been for the Book club, however, it was an enjoyable read and would recommend it.
It could have been so much more November 7, 2008 The first half of Time Traveler's Wife was like a house on fire: so intense and well-framed that it seemed to suck the oxygen right out of the room. Then, around the time Henry and Claire began to try for a baby (and time travel was no longer the central focus) it, sadly, gave itself over to melodrama.
That's not to say it wasn't good; it was. But if Audrey Niffenegger had trusted us enough to understand Henry & Claire's connection, it could have been beyond great. Instead we're left with her spelling everything out in an overly simplified and often sappy way.
End result: on the strength of the first half alone, I'd heartily recommend Time Traveler's Wife. I just can't help feeling it could have been so much more...
A must read November 2, 2008 A must read, this book is the best thing I have ever read. It got me from the start, kept my attention, and was utterly compelling. If you like reading about human emotion, particularly with relation to love, but you like a story that isn't based in a fairytale world, then you will love it.
One of my favourite books. November 1, 2008 Wow. Reading some of the other reviews, you will be able to get the gist of what the story is about. I'm not going to comment on this, because it's for you to find out yourself. I picked up this book on holiday after having run out of books. I had no idea what it was about other than the literal assumption taken from the title. I was blown away. It was truly beautiful, and I cried so hard towards the end! My father didn't enjoy it at all and couldn't see why I was so enthralled by it, so I'm not going to say you WILL like it, because you might not. But if you have any sort of softness for the real kind of intense love between two people, then I don't see how you couldn't enjoy this book.
Love in All the Tenses! October 25, 2008 I nearly didn't buy this book because the mention of 'time travel' put me off, being the factual soul that I am! The claim that it was an international besteseller, however, tempted me - surely so many people couldn't all have been wrong. Early on in the story I still had real doubts - 'What nonesense', I'm thinking, but before long (and much to my surprise) I'd bought-in to the whole idea, as the author convinced me of Henry's reality! Audrey Niffenegger's ingenuity is admirable - the comings and goings of Henry were hard to keep up with, even though I was the reader - which indicates what an amazing job she did when plotting the detail to tie-in so gracefully with the story as a whole. This is essentialy the love story of Henry and Clare, but unlike any other love story you will have read - an excellent read.
