5 out of 5 stars Close your eyes and you are in the Villa Bramasole, Tuscany   May 24, 2000

Congratulations to Frances Mayes for such an interesting book. I feel I was part of her struggle and wanted to say to her, give up your work in America and live in Tuscany. How can she bear to leave it. My mouth watered at some of these Tuscan meals, and I will try the recipes.

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully written - pure escapism   January 22, 2000

I loved this book - Frances Mayes writes like a poet and transports the reader to the sights, smells and tastes of Tuscany. However, I have to confess to a strong urge to want to throttle her almost from the first page when she announces that the exorbitant price of the property is "just one small thing". No it isn't ... money IS an object for some people! ... It would have been nice if she acknowledged, just once, that her circumstances are different from most people's, and that she is exceptionally fortunate to live such a charmed, idyllic life. If this sounds like sour grapes - it is! Still, none of this detracts from the fact that she writes like an angel and conjures up the spirit and romance of Italy. Loved the recipes, too.

4 out of 5 stars A Delightful Journey -- An Inspriation   September 6, 1999

Instantly I felt transported to a wonderful countryside. The descriptives had me aching to be in Tuscany and enjoying the delights of the people, foods, history, churches, homes, beaches... Thank you, Frances Mayes, for sharing such an intimate part of your life, not to mention the recipes! I bought herb plants and a mini food processor during my reading -- the pesto is exquisite! Many thanks...
