3 out of 5 stars Falls between two stools   April 8, 2007
I actually found this book quite useful - so why only three stars? Because it's trying to do two things at once: (a) be a beginner's guide to C# programming (e.g. it tries to "explain" what a variable is) and (b) take you through a tour of all that C# can do. As an experienced programmer, I could have done without the material for beginners. [And as a former programming trainer I thought the explanations really weren't much good for beginners.] Better to have written 2 books, each targeted at a single readership.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book   March 6, 2007

I bought this book a few weeks ago and even though I am not near finishing the book (1000+ pages!) I am impressed so far. Its logical, easy to understand for beginners and covers most of what is needed. When you finish you shoud move on the 'Professional Visual C# 2005 book by the same publishers as is recommended.

I did not give it full marks as there are a few errors in the code samples which I have not come accross but are listed in the errata section of the book's website. I believe that a technical book like this should not have any errors that may mislead readers.

I recommend this book for any beginner ( with programming experience or not) who wants to learn C# in the Visual Studio.Net environment.

3 out of 5 stars Boring!!   November 26, 2006

I'll start by adding that I have only read 7 chapters up to yet, so you never know how it will turn out.
I have a litte programming experience, and am an MCDBA, and have several Microsoft accreditations so i am no stranger to boring computer books:-) . I really enjoy programming, almost get a buzz from it (sad i know!) but this book is really boring me!! so far it has been very dull and quite hard to keep up with. I've heard Wrox are very good, so i hope it picks up!!!!

Previous to my other post, i thought i'd top it up now that i am further into the book (well sort of). This book ended up in the bin! ive since used an ebook from o'reilly and mainly used an apress c# book and am happliy learning away. If it would let me change my original post i would take all the start away.

For me it was an absolutley terrible book, the examples were seemingly pointless - you are about 2-3 chapters in, just getting to grips with c# code variables etc then they throw this 'Mandelbrot' image at you - loads of lines of code, loops and functions and stuff that just dumfounds you and doesnt actually teach you anything (scares you infact)!!! needless to say i skipped i tried it once, noticed it was completely useless and skipped it!! When talking about desgning classes, they explain (sort of) what the different types of classes are etc, then proceed to talk you through the rest of the book like your a super whizz at c# programming!!!! the excercises i found to be quite rubbish the later on in the book i got aswell, en example is the adding members to classes chapter, you just managed to get your head around what members are what (everytime you read a sentance you have to back to the start of the chapter to find out what these terms they are using actually mean!!) they do - then they tell you to write some bloody class with these members and do this do that - which you havent got a clue what they are on about.

anyway - in my opinion this book overcomplecates c# and for me makes you scared and think twice about actually learning it. Since this I've used another wrox book to learn C++ so i dont think its wrox books as a whole just this one!! My advice is buy another book

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners.   May 7, 2006

I am very new to C# and as soon as I started out with the new Visual Express version I knew that I needed a good refference tool to help me develop my knowledge. 'Beginning Visual C# 2005' is excellent, packed with information for beginners and great for those moving over to C# from VB etc. The terminology can take a little getting used, especially for those of us without computer science degrees, but as you work through the book the concepts raised soon slot into place, especially if you try out all the examples along the way.
The examples are a plus point as they all work(as of 07/05/06), I was very glad of that because I have had books in the past where there have been really bad coding errors mostly due to spelling and typo errors, so far none found in this book.

The book is ideally aimed at those with Visual Studio, but the refferences to visual studio can be crossed over to Visual Express in most cases, there are very few parts that are Visual Studio only.(Class diagram explorer)

For those wishing to rush out and type their first C# game will not find information on game engine building in this book, however the book does provide a firm grounding on the fundementals of C#. One should learn to walk before learning to run so to speak.

5 out of 5 stars Very quick overview   January 31, 2006

I'm new to .net having come from Visual FoxPro and I must say this is a great introduction for a fairly experienced programmer and it recovers some ground in excellent detail. It is split into sections so you can pick and choose which areas to look at next, but makes more sense as a cover to cover read.

I am thoroughly enjoying using this book and I recommend it to anyone who wants to get serious about learning C#, with good example code, very detailed descriptions and logical explanations to concepts and the .net framework.

I have about 3 books all at the introductory level for existing programmers, this is by far the best one I have read so far.
