A very complete manual January 13, 2003 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
A very complete manual, has everything you need to know about sailling. Very usefull information and accessible language for amateurs. Very good ilustrations. Is edited in many languages (i've seen it in portuguese, french and english). Topics in this book are covered extensively enough to let you know the essential, and shortly enough to leave you with the desire of experimenting.
Altought this book is exelent for begginer... December 24, 2001 29 out of 30 found this review helpful
Complete Sailing Manual by Steve Sleight is, without any doubt, the most extensive and complete "how to sail" manual for beginners. It's a good reminder for information concerning simple, but indispensable things in dinghies. For more advancing sailing it's chapter about "sailing in regatta dinghies" is a little incomplete and vague, as it would have to have close details on high performance dinghy classes. This look upon high perfomance dinghy classes would be very helpfull to people who sail in suck kind of boats, because books regarding those kind of boats are quite rare or hard to find. For example the trapeze chapter lacks of diagrams or information regarding regatta and tactic data. The rigging systems also lacks of variety: the systems showned in this book are very few, for there are inumerous dinghies with inumerous rigging system. The begginer section is very well constructed and illustrated, with diagrams and self-explainatory pictures. I recommend this book to persons who began to sail. I myself used this book to search for informations that I've forgot, and I actually learnt various things with it. I've particulary enjoyed Hellen MacArthur's prologue. Overall, this is an exelent book! With simple language, well written : good all-round work (but lacking on particular aspects of sailing!). My English isn't very good, so I ask for pardon in that matter! Buy the book!
Excellent December 20, 2000 22 out of 23 found this review helpful
Don't let the Dorling Kindersley tag put you off. This book is first rate, up to date, clearly laid out, excellently illustrated, and well written. And it's good value for money, too. True, it's not a dense specialist work on some particular aspect of sailing, but I certainly recommend it as a really good all-round work, like The Handbook of Sailing by Bob Bond.
A superb book for the beginner - highly recommended September 25, 2000 32 out of 32 found this review helpful
Coming back into sailing after many years, we looked for a book to help brush up our skills and chose The Complete Sailing Manual. It has become well thumbed. The book provides detailed information on every type of sailing from small dinghys to larger cruising yachts in a most informative manner. There are lots of diagrams and pictures to illustrate the points being made. It is also written in such a way that you can read it from cover to cover, or dip into it as circumstances dictate. It has been avidly read by all, from aged 10 to aged 78! The author also responded very promptly to email enquiries when we were considering the purchase of a yacht. A book which comes highly recommended
