2 out of 5 stars Get The Rough Guide for Laos   January 20, 2002

Went to Laos at the end of 2001 so even more out of date by then. Maps are wrong and plenty of other information is now very incorrect. Joe's writing style is condescending and there was no personality in it at all. Other travellers that we met who were using this book didn't have a good word to say about it, but plenty of good about Rough Guide and Footprint. Don't know when next issue is out but they need to spend some time there to get it right this time. It's one saving grace was that the history of Laos was well researched and written.

I took this book to Laos on a visit in December 1998 and it was factually way out of date even then.True to form it is written in the typically stark utilitarian Lonely Planet style with absolutely no sense of personality or individuality.Buy maybe for background information but overall vastly inferior to both the Footprint and the Rough Guide.
