5 out of 5 stars French Bed and Breakfast   November 25, 2006

Alastair Sawday is on record as saying that he does not believe in ratings. But to be in an Alastair Sawday guide is a rating in itself. French Bed and Breakfast is indispensable for travellers who enjoy rambling round the French countryside. We have stayed at a wide variety of "Special Places" in the last five years and never been disappointed. The descriptions are accurate, the prices are clearly indicated, and you can be sure of a welcome and an excellent breakfast everywhere. Some establishments re-appear every year but it's worth getting a new version regularly to enjoy new places and to keep up to date with inevitable price increases.

5 out of 5 stars THE only guide you will ever need   November 24, 2006

Alastair Sawday is the "bible" for those in the know. Staying in the places recommended in the guide is always a treat, the hosts amiable, accommodation always good and invariably the guests staying are like-minded idividuals, as they are also long-term fans of Alastair Sawday's guides. Don't go to France without it!

5 out of 5 stars Never beaten!   November 23, 2006

Having used a previous edition of this book, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the new edition. I have used their guides extensively both in France and Spain, and have never found fault with the places recommended. Not aimed at any one group in particular, you can find something for every pocket and taste, and each place will be run with care and comfort of the customer as a priority. I put together a route for my brother cycling through France, mainly using places from this guide, and he came back overjoyed by his welcomes!

4 out of 5 stars special indeed   November 23, 2006

We have used French B&B for the first time this year, having heard many positive comments on Sawdays guides from discerning friends. It is easy to use and very personal. You get an idea of the owners, a fair description of what to expect. You do need to read the descriptions carefully, as we misunderstood their 'bourgeois' reference and expected more than what we got (in Cabourg). We were delighted with our other B&B (Chateau in Barneville Carteret) as the setting was gorgeous, the family very welcoming as per the description. Worth noting that the guide mentions B&B with family rooms, has a succinct 'how to get there' explanation and has simple maps; all very convenient if, like us, you use the guide for last minute booking whilst already in France. We will definitely use it again.

5 out of 5 stars Variety with conviviality is the spice of touring in France   November 22, 2006

My wife and if Have used Alistair Sawday's "French Bed & Breakfast" in his "Special Places to Stay" series for our annual visits to France for more than 10 years. We have criss-crossed the country from Brittany to Provence by very varied routes and nearly always can find a chambre d'hotes in the book that suits our night's stop. We have tried similar publications but have always returned to this book for the variety of B&B gathered therein. We have found the photograph helpful and the descriptions of both the house and our hosts accurate. There is also a good range of price - and we have found the less expensive, equally pleasant as the more expensive, if perhaps not so luxurious - and often the most convivial. Somehow the researchers manage to pick the most charming hosts and we have enjoyed the company at tables d'hotes of many French and other nationalities. In summary we would not travel in France without planning our stopovers with the book and the latest edition continues to provide just what is needed to enjoy France and the French
