Wonderful! April 8, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
So sad to see this finish its run on a Sunday night, felt I got to know the characters so well. Great acting, lovely storylines, gorgeous countryside. Comfort TV at its best, if you missed it, get the DVDs, bet you watch them back to back!
Good, but not good enough April 3, 2008 14 out of 18 found this review helpful
This is an enjoyable, well produced and for the most part well acted series, however it bears almost no relation to the original books which is a great disappointment to all of us who grew up loving these wonderful stories. As someone who studied the books for A'level sadly 30 years ago now, and also as a fan of the wonderful stage productions involving the Albion Band, I looked forward with great anticipation to this series. Sadly, episode 1 made it clear that this was 'based' on the original, and very loosely at that. Gone is the wonderful social history and acute character description of Flora Thompson, only to be replaced by a sacharine image of English Country life. Laura is no longer a shy but intelligent girl developing into a self assured young woman at the centre of her community, only to be replaced by a 21st century flirtatious teenager who is almost unrecognisable as the original character which was of course a thinly disguised autobiography of Thompson herself. I will never understand why television adaptations have to be like this, but if you are willing to view the series as being little more than a shadow of the original, go ahead and enjoy it for it's own sake. But for God's sake read the book as well!
Lark Rise - romance not reality April 2, 2008 8 out of 27 found this review helpful
The dramas made from Lark Rise by the BBC seemed to me a strange imitation of the American TVs maltreatment of Laura Ingalls Wilders childhood memories- I enjoyed the BBC series as romance but apart from the names and some incidents - for instance the postmans refusal to work on Sunday- they bore no relation to the gritty reality of the books on which they were supposed to be based.
Perhaps the BBC could show the play put on at the National Theatre which gave a far better interpretation of the books - and the actors and their clothes were dirty, which never seems the case in any period drama on TV!
Viewing Quality March 25, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Another quality series with everything available for those who love the classics . It remains alongside Pride and Prejudice , Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth edition ,to be viewed during the winter months . Well worth purchasing this one .
