4 out of 5 stars FREE AT LAST! FREE AT LAST!   September 20, 2008

Heavens to Betsy! We are free at last!

I'm speaking of the tyranny of Norton of course - their products got worse as they bacame more expensive.

I installed about a week ago and it's been great. Quick to load. Seems efficient. Simple to use.

One tip: The defragger on the Tune Up is a bit weak willed and gives up on heaviy fragmented drives. Do a full defrag with the installed Windows defragger first and then it should run ok.

All in all OneCare is so much less invasive than Norton that it is liberating. If we have to have antivirus programs then this is the one for me.

And you really can't argue with the free 90 day trial availabe on-line....

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all   September 19, 2008
OK - I have had this product a month now. I have used a 3rd party firewall for something like 3 years or so now and was pretty happy with it except the PC lagging badly whenever it decided to activate an update or utility during a game - my PC would often freeze for a good while.

I already pay to use extended service MSN hotmail so i already have a billing account with them - this product requires you to register with them via a Windows live account - in my experience they give plenty of notice when your subscrition is up so you can cancel easily should you wish to.

Good bits

You don't need to be too PC literate to use this software - you get big buttons for 'tune up' and such like.

I works well not to cause too much lag in the OS - and so it should being from the same manufacturer.

It will check your PC periodically and advise you what admin tasks you should be doing - you can do them by a click and following the prompts.

Bad Bits

The system does a complete validation check and software update of all MS components without really asking.

It assumes you will use this software to perform admin the way MSN recommend. If you wish to deviate you get to live with pop ups every time you start up, recommending certain actions.

If you don't perform some actions the software gives you an amber status light and 'fair' status, to get green & good you need to follow the recommended action - some people may get intimidated into doing it all the 'MSN way'

On balance it works well and is easy to use, i can live with amber and do my backups my way.

4 out of 5 stars Peace Of Mind   September 18, 2008

I'm a bit of a technophobe but found this easy to install. I've previously been using a free antivirus software but thought this might offer better protection. This is a firewall as well and it only allows you to access "safe" sites but will ask permission if it thinks you're trying to go to an unsafe site. It doesn't seem to have slowed my laptop down at all.

3 out of 5 stars reasonable protection for the average user   September 15, 2008
Microsoft have now come up with their own internet security system OneCare which includes antivirus, antiphishing, antispyware and firewall. in addition to your average internet security system OneCare allows you to easily schedule disc defragementation which is handy for me as it takes such a long time - i like to just set it to defragment every month to help make my system run more smoothly. Similar to other high profile internet security systems, OneCare allows you to install and protect up to 3 pc's as well as updates for one year. For the average user this will do just as well as any other internet security software but with the addition of allowing backups as well as pc optimisation. A good competitive piece of security for your system.

4 out of 5 stars Decent all-in-one solution for those who don't want the fuss   September 7, 2008
Windows Live One Care is a good, robust product - it installs with the minimum of fuss (uninstalling any previous antivirus / firewall software, although asking first), takes little setup (runs straight out of the box in dependable Microsoft fashion), and does a solid job of protecting your PC (it had no problem detecting potential virus infections on my computer, and the firewall seems secure enough). Its ease of installation and use could be seen as a good or bad point, depending on your viewpoint - power users will want the tweaking capability offered by individual products, whereas the average home user will be overjoyed to find out that there is relatively little to do to keep Internet nastiness at bay. It's non-intrusive, sitting in your status bar for most of the time, and when it does call for action, the interface is slick and a joy to use.

It includes several nice features outside the general Internet safety arena, namely data backup services, PC tune up and boot-up time speed-up - I did notice a slight improvement in my boot-up time, so it isn't all hype!

Bear in mind that, like most commercial PC protection suites, it's a subscription product that gives you a year from installation out of the box, but after that will require renewal for virus definitions and the like. Not a problem if you're happy to pay for the all-in-one solution - although with several free, separate alternatives available, more comfortable PC users will probably prefer the less costly option.

For users who want neither fuss nor worry, this is ideal.
