Quite simply the best value for money Canon prime lens you can buy!
Amazing quality photos in low light conditions - great for portraits.
As countless others have noted, the only negative is the cheap build quality, but then any lens needs to be cared for! Used with care produces great results, full stop.
Fantastic lens at a fantastic price October 28, 2008
Like many others on here, the review and consistent first place on Amazon's Canon lenses made me take the plunge on this little gem. Coupled with my 400D, it produces some fantastic portrait photos with amazing depth of field. You'd struggle to use it for group photography, but for two or maybe three people huddled together, it should be fine. Don't be put off by the cheap and cheerful build quality, the photos it produces are worth it and should it ever break on me, I'll happily buy another!

What a cracker for 58 + vat. As most reviews say, it is a must have for all Canon DSLR owners. Popped it on to my 350 and very impressed by the quality and colour produced by this lens, much richer and sharper colours than the stock lens supplied with the camera. Small and light and excellent for low light level shots. Dont delay, buy today.

I recall I picked this up from a retailer for around 50 or so, and have never looked back - I would have gladly paid more.
Sure the plastic mount and fiddly focus ring sound offputting, believe me they are hardly a hindrance. The depth-of-field offered by this prime lens is exceptional for the cost, at f1.8 the slim line of focus is apparent and often you can stop down to f2.2 for that added sharpness. 50mm is a decent focal length for many scenarios, ideal for portraiture and still life to a degree. I use this lens regularly and rate it highly.

I bought this for my 450D after reading all the reviews on Amazon and lots of other photo sites.
I then took it to Mull this weekend and got some stunning images with it. After getting some ultra sharp images I decided that I wanted to get a bit more of the beach in from the same place, so got my kit lens out. I got the nifty fifty off the camera, put the kit lens on and then dropped the 50mm on to the concrete slipway. It rolled about and I caught it, but I was petrified to look after all the bad reviews that stated stuff like "I gently knocked this against the wall and it fell apart."
Well boys and girls, I dropped mine from 4ft on to concrete and it's still alive and kicking, with little more than a few sand grain sized scuffs.
This lens, for the price, is simply amazing. I dont care that it makes a wee bzzz noise when it focuses. I also dont care if it feels cheap, because this thing takes images so sharp that you sit gawping at the images you get. The DOF is superb and can be utilised excellently to get pro looking images instantly. Yeah the Bokeh may look hexagonal, but so what. I bought the additional lens hood for this, and I think that took a lot of the slipway blow, but even still, it's fantastic.
Try finding a brand new sharper lens for 70. I dare you....I double dare you.
