Amazon.co.uk Review
The humble spinning-top (the precursor of the i-Top) has been a children's favourite for literally thousands of years, with variations on the theme first appearing around 2000 BC. So it is of no surprise that this well-loved toy has now entered the digital age with the introduction of the i-Top, a modern take on this classic plaything.

At first glance the i-Top looks much like a slightly futuristic but otherwise normal spinning top, with just the addition of two buttons and a row of eight tiny red lights on the top surface hinting at anything unusual. What makes the i-Top special is that it doesn't just spin--it plays games. These are all based on how long or how fast you can spin the top, with scores magically displayed on its surface as it spins, using the lights mentioned above. A clever folding spindle transforms the product into a slim disc, perfect for slipping into a pocket and making this a game that kids can amuse themselves with wherever they go. Put like this, the product sounds very simple but tests showed that the i-Top's simplicity is actually its biggest strength, making it hugely addictive for children and adults alike. It is great fun to play and is certain to bring out a competitive streak in even the most placid of individuals.

The games played by the i-Top (how many times can you get the top to spin before it falls; how fast can you get it to spin and how close can you get to a random number of spins displayed by the i-Top) are easy to get the hang of and perfect for individual play as well as competitive gaming among friends. There's also a "Mystic Mode" that lets you ask the i-Top a question: "Will I beat my son's best i-Top score?" and get a simple answer: "Not likely!" much like an electronic magic 8 ball. --Adi Himpson

4 out of 5 stars Very good but broke in less than a month   October 4, 2005

This is a very good idea and kept my son (and me) entertained for some time. After spinning it on every surface in the house he discovered that his sister's laminate floor provided the optimal number of spins. However, it broke in less than a month and so was consigned to the dustbin - good while it lasted.

... this is a great toy and easy to take anywhere with a flat surface to entertain the family. It attracts lots of interest and amuses both kids and adults alike for hours. Interesting to see who can and can't spin a top and how frustrated some get at their inability. You just can't give up trying to beat your previous score! A must for the santa sack or as an executive toy and at an affordable price !

5 out of 5 stars Excellent fun for all ages   August 12, 2005

We bought this for our 11year old son and he carries it everywhere. The whole family have had great fun with this from grandparents to 5 year old brothers. We are all enthralled. Getting closest to the target is the favourite game as it requires more skill rather than being the best spinner. The 5yr olds loved the asking question game as well, they have giggled for long periods even playing on their own and reading the text - anything that encourages reading is good. Great invention

5 out of 5 stars Hours of fun   April 17, 2005

The toy itself is a very elegant design concept.

My 9 year daughter thought this toy was great fun, but the only thing you can learn from it is a flick of the wrist.

The challenge feature (beat a certain number of revs. was voted the most interesting.

The random answers to your questions kept her interested for a while too.

A co-ordinated 5 year old would enjoy this - no need to wait 'til you are 10!

5 out of 5 stars A little fun in your pocket   March 4, 2005

For the great amazon price of "less than a fiver", one can have a spinning top that provides hours of fun. With four games that allow anyone of any spinning skill to play competitively. Fantastic for quality family time, as all ages above 5 years could complete in a fairly even manner. The price and the size are certainly great features of this toy, but the fun is priceless.
