This multimedia player lets you take your favourite music, films, TV programmes and digital photos with you wherever you go. Transferring and downloading files to and from your computer is incredibly easy, thanks to the Zens USB connection. The Zen also has an SD/SDHC memory card slot for storing additional music and videos. The Zen even has a built-in FM tuner and voice recording function, making it the ultimate portable multimedia device.

3 out of 5 stars So close...   August 29, 2008

OK, lets be clear here. This is a lovely little machine. Compact, but powerful. It's very close to perfect.

The whole thing is let down though by the way it handles the SD card. I bought this because the card would let me expand it. Take a middle capacity player and slap in a series of 16Gig cards and have enough to last me a lifetime.

Alas, while using the music stored on the internal memory is a dream, the stuff on the card is horrible. It's like one of those jumped up pen drives promising 'A massive 128 Megabytes' you get cheap from petrol stations. It won't even remember where you've paused a recording.

1 out of 5 stars poor rating for ease of use/unorganized player   August 19, 2008

well it was a bit of a let down for the first delivery of this player to not turn on at all!! Amazon has a really good return policy though so thats not too much of an issue, i guess i was just a bit unlucky. Well I got a replacement very soon after and I feel quite let down by the way the player is organized.
I will first off say in its defense, its very small sized and lightweight, looks very nice with a very large amount of storage space.

The main reason i bought the player was for music, to be honest i didnt even try playing a video on it so i cant comment on that. The biggest problem i had with it is the way you search for music files on the player. My preference is to have a computer hardrive like display where you can easily navigate between different folders and choose to play particular folders/albums/individual songs. This player does not have that option. It organizes songs by Artist/Genre/etc but only picks up on songs that have some kind of tag such as an ID3 tag. Ive removed all these tags from all my mp3s on my computer so that players such as winamp & windows media show the filename that ive made. This means that if your mp3 doesnt have some kind of extra tag on it saying for example that its a certain genre, it wont appear with others that do. And in my case as none of my mp3s have additional tags other than artist name and track name EVERY single song is displayed in one long list. Very hard to navigate through!!! Because of this i had to send it back..

another problem i had with the zen is the volume was not quite loud enough. Its decent with all the settings tweaked but still could be a bit louder..

I would not recommend this player unless all your mp3s have got tags on them which will put them into the correct place for Artist/Album/Genre/etc..

After the disappointment of the Zen i went for an iAudio 7. The largest storage space available on this is 16gb, only half the Zen and the controls are quite sensitive which takes getting used to but other than that it exceeds in every other music playing aspect and i am very happy i happened to come across the iAudio 7 - its display is organized folder by folder as i like it and how it appears on a computer. Very loud and good quality crisp sound, and the player itself is smaller. If your looking to play videos though this again i havent even bothered trying on this player but the screen is very small so i couldnt compare that aspect of it.

5 out of 5 stars Very Very Good   August 18, 2008

Having purchased this item and been an owner of the excellent Vision:M I must say this is a big improvement. The Zen arrive in good time as with all of my orders with Amazon so no problems there.

The small size of the Creative Zen is now very convenient to use when taking it out, whereas the Vision:M was too bulky. The D-Pad is easy to use, although I must admit I prefer the scroll pad, but no problems with it at all.

Putting files on your Zen can not be easier, you can drag and drop, or simply use the Explorer that comes with the CD. I am using Media Monkey to find and add missing album art. This method is so much easier than iTunes as I have previously owned an iPod and have friends who complains about iTunes. This is much easier by comparison.

The screen quality is fantastic, the interface is nice and easy to use, I'm happy that all the previous features are included (DJ features) with new themes. The sound quality as with the Vision:M is brilliant, with fully customizable Equalizer.

Battery life is also very good, it doesn't come with a charger sadly and comes with the worlds shortest USB cable for it, don't know what they were thinking when they decided on the length but it's just a very minor problem.

The video has been a problem since the Vision:M, and I see they have not fixed it for this version, which means it's still a pain, but I have found a software which converts and makes all my videos compatible, so it is no longer a problem for me.

Overall this device in my opinion is a fantastic upgrade from the Vision:M having all the features from it predecessor and more features, new interface, a much better size. Whether it is better than an iPod touch I can't say, but I would definitely recommend the Zen should you consider buying one!!

1 out of 5 stars I Would Avoid Buying This Like The Plague   August 6, 2008

It's a shame I have to write a harsh review for this product as when I first got it it did everything I wanted - the sound quality was great, my whole collection synched over through WMP without a hitch, the screen quality is amasing, even the internal mic is way better quality than I expected, the SD Card slot made me confidant that this was going to be my MP3 player for sometime to come... I was all ready to be writing an incredibly glowing report.

Then it froze. It happened while I was using the (pretty poor to start with) Creative software to bring in some videos, the unit remained on but the screen was blank. It wouldn't be reset or turned off. Searching the internet for a solution, Ifound similar stories, all advising to let it run out of battery then re-charge it and it should be fine. This seemed to work but again, it crashed after having been powered up again for about five minutes.

I told Amzon and I have to say they were very swift in sending me a replacement, however after I had it for two days the same thing happened again, and again. I went on creative's site and went through every single recovery/cleanup/reformating process they had on offer, then it crashed again. I sent Creative an email explaining this and they sent me a standard response repeating all of the recovery process I had just said I had already done.

Put simply, I will not put up with this - For it to happen twice to two different machines suggests more than just a random defect - if you buy this product you will likely suffer the same irritation.

When it's working it's a great player but it spent as much time frozen and in a state where all I could do is wait for it to run out of battery.

It's a great shame as it's the only 32gb flash player there is, and has great sound and visual quality - but Creative need to sort their act out big time for me to ever consider buying from them again.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty impressive   July 18, 2008
I have received my ZEN a few days ago, I had no problem dowloading music from my media player on my PC, just plug in the USB and tell you PC to sync, and will do it, the media player will find the Zen in Sync mode only. one draw back I notice that you cannot format the zen with its own software, but it was no problem I formated mine through the PC. go to my computer click on my Zen, and format it.

The Zen is a good unit but not made as solid and quality as Sony walkman, nor it does sound as good, but if you compare it with i-pod then this sound better, and smaller and with highier memory than Nano. and also with video capability.

Highly recomanded, but I wish it was cheaper then it is today.
