Best Radio on Market July 14, 2008 This is a superb piece of kit, and distinguishes itself by being very well made physically. Most radios are cheap plastic with a tinny sound (such as Roberts and Bush which used to be superb but are now cheaply put together in China). The functions are advanced with easy-to-use recording, alarms and presets. Remote control is good. This radio downloads the week's schedule for all radio stations, which you can use to record ahead simply by selecting the programme you're interested in. Pleasing to the eye, nice and weighty, powerful speakers with excellent sound. This is a good improvement on the (excellent) Evoke 2 (which I bought 3 years ago). The only complaint is that the memory card to which programmes are recorded is not included and must be bought separately for 30, but you can record 30 hours of audio on it. Overall excellent and priced correctly (169.99 in John Lewis). This is a better purchase than half a dozen 40 digital radios, as those radios lack power.
Regret not buying this sooner!!!! January 20, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I think just about everything has been written about what this radio is capable of. My advice is buy it, shop around for the best price obviously, presently around 160. For goodness sake don't worry about DAB + compatibility ( its a few years away ) Just buy it and enjoy the truely amazing sound this produces. I guarantee you will fall in love with this remarkable piece of technology. PS I was thinking of writing 4 or 5 paragraphs of pro and cons, but its all been done. I'm a DAB freek ! Heard and played around with loads of kit including radios in the Pure range, but presently this is overall the best DAB you can buy.
Great Radio, but no support for DAB+ January 6, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is a great sounding radio and it is extremely well specified, but it is not future compatible. Like most current DAB radios does not support the forthcoming DAB+ standard. In other words, it will be obsolete in around 5 years (the only model that currently supports DAB+ is the Cronos II). All manufacturers seem keen to keep this information hidden, for obvious reasons.
Although the Evoke 3 can record programmes to an SD card, the file format is Mp2, the native for digital radio. Unfortunately, virtually no Mp3 players and the iPod do not support Mp2 and you need to convert the files to listen to them on these devices, not a problems but something to be aware of.
Well worth purchasing if you can live with the above.
Rubbish December 3, 2007 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
Good things - sounds ok and you can record on it. Bad things - the controls are slow and frustrating and totally illogical. It's slow - it will take ages to catch up with what you want it to do and then it gets confused. Mine keeps freezing on me and the manual of course doesn't tell you how to reset. Oh and the best thing is that the clock on it is wrong but I can't change it - so when I try to record using timed event it will miss the first couple of minutes. Pure have told me to amend the timed event e.g. for a programme starting at 12 set the time for 11.58!!
Great Sound but quite a danger when using the chargepak! July 29, 2007 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
I have had two of these radios, the first one went back because of a fault with the connections. - The radio worked fine when on mains, but when i switched to battery (to make it portable), it died and the only way to get it working again would be to remove all batteries or the chargepak, plug it back into mains and then replace the batteries. Not very portable. - The radio itself is really good, sound quality is great and the use of the SD card facility is a masterpiece, - but...when my second radio came exactly the same thing occurred. Then to add to that I plugged it in one day and the chargepak skin melted, the spring connection from the battery to the radio became hot and melted away from the frame resulting in a smoke filled room and a panic on my behalf. - The radio went straight back and has been replacd by something a little safer.
