Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Simplicity and speed, these are the criteria on which Nikon has designed the Coolpix L3. As the successor for the Coolpix 4600, the L3 combines everything from its successful predecessor and then improves it. The L3 is equipped with a CCD sensor of 5 million pixels, is compact and ergonomic, and will allow you to take excellent quality shots, all while taking advantage of its speed (1/3,000 of a second). Its modern look makes the L3 the envy of the other cameras in its category, all while offering great comfort and a sure hand when taking photos. It also allows you to quickly position yourself for the shot with its 2" diagonal TFT screen To facilitate your photo taking, the Coolpix L3 offers the possibility of scene modes that will allow you to quickly adapt to the situation at hand, so you never miss a shot! Designed for all photographers who are looking for unbeatable quality in relation to price, the Coolpix L3 is without a doubt up to the level of its predecessor!

2 out of 5 stars Do not buy   December 18, 2007

Looking to buy my first digital camera I did my research and finally decided to buy the Coolpix L3. Price was my first consideration as I only wanted to spend approx 100 and also I wanted a camera that was easy to use. Well thats the only two good things about this camera. If you want to take a picture of flower or nice scenic shot then its perfect but if you want to take a picture of a child, pet or anything that is likely to move then DO NOT buy this camera. The shutter speed is so slow you could go and put the kettle on waiting for it, also the auto-focus seems to take for ever when you are trying to get the kids to pose for a photo.
Although this camera is easy to use, not too many fancy features, I am afraid I find it very frustrating and would not recommend it unless you only want to snap away at still-life!!

3 out of 5 stars Decent camera - fatally flawed   April 14, 2007

I got this to replace my old Canon Ixus. It's biggest flaw is that the power button is way too sensitive. It doesn't take much to accidentally turn it on and when it does the lens will try to open but it jams, draining the batteries to nothing.

I've tried different camera cases, bags, pockets - I've even thought about glueing bits around the button to shield it, but finally I've resorted to taking the batteries out after every session. Not good. To fix it they should've sunk the button into the body, made it less responsive or have it auto power off after a 'lens error'. The main reason I got it was for the use of AA batteries but now, just want my old Canon back.

This is my first digital camera and I am really impressed with the ease of use. Ideal for the novice photographer with fantastic quality of picture. A great happy snapper camera! Buy one today!

4 out of 5 stars Great outdoors, good indoors after tweaking.   September 9, 2006

Bought this to replace a slightly dissapointing panasonic FX8.
The panasonic may have a motion stabiliser and cost more but its sharpness and exposure were inconsistent.
Having then bought a canon ixus off ebay which broke within a couple of days I decided to try Nikon.

First the flaws. The flash is very weak for indoor shots. Thats the least of its problems inside though. Its like a child has painted your room in overbright colours. Fortunately there is a way round this. Select flash for white balance and all is fine. The auto white balance function is useless as it doesn't take into account if you're using the flash.
For indoor shots up the exposure compensation to +1 and you'll get clear usable shots indoors without as much noise as on the panasonic.

If you accidentally forget and leave the white balance set on flash outdoors the results are slightly warmer but I actually prefer them so I'll just leave it set on that. Outdoors images are clear sharp, with good colours.

The battery life is reasonable, the display good, and the ease of use simple.

The camera has one huge failing for a beginner though, and thats the auto mode won't produce a decent shot inside. If you change the white balance to flash all is fine but you shouldn't have to do that.

Also its a bit of a slow performer, the autofocus is rather slow for taking moving shots, if you pre-focus its quite quick.

The decent price and good outdoor shots (best I've seen in a compact, panasonic and canon included) mean I still give it 4 stars, it would have got 5 if it didn't have its significant flaws.

5 out of 5 stars Great Camera   April 26, 2006

If you are a point and shooter type person, this camera is perfect for you. Easy to use, both the auto and manual options are great. The software is also very very good, especially the red eye removal.
I previously had a Canon camera, but this camera was 1/2 the price, with double the features.
Buy it - you won't regret it!!
