Don't try this on a motorbike July 29, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Probably the worst bit of kit I have every owned, now onto my 3rd camera, previous 2 have had to be returned due to one major flaw
Attach it to anything that might vibrate such as a motorcycle and it switches off after 5-10 seconds due to the virbations.
To verify, hold in hand, start recording and shake gently, 5-10 seconds later it switches off
What a waste of money
Almost Perfect - But Flawed May 22, 2008 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
I had one of these (making the big mistake of buying it from French company - Pixmania - bad move) I didnt like the Spanish packaging they sent me - so returned it and bought a UK version from Argos - however Amazon sell it for 25 cheaper including postage - so its a no brainer where to buy it from, readers ... where was I ?. Ah yes. The unit itself is ok. Its hardy, well designed and tough. BUT the strap for a motorbike crash helmet is a tad small .. but it does work. To effect this .. you slide the strap from the BOTTOM of the helmet ... not the top as you'd naturally think. Erm ... and I dont like the idea of semipermanently sticking a camera mount on my helmet when out and about and no camera fitted, so I instead used the handlebar mount - which, with the supplied rubber insert actually worked surprisingly well. So much so I videoed the missus on a run to Matlock Bath on her bike (go to YOUTUBE and type in "Lorna Harley" and you'll see it. I inserted a 2GB card and used the top quality setting to get 53 mins of video. And the quality?. Hmmm. Not great but fine for YouTube. And my Apple Mac iMovie recognised the files straight away. Bonus!. Now .. the downside. Its a bit expensive for what it is. I think 60 max would be right. The display is a bit teensy weensy and the buttons are very hard to press down. The sound is a joke - and is pointless really - just a lot of mumbling and pops and bangs ... weird addition. To make this a 5* item they should make the display clearer - add a functional microphone or at least a mike input socket for those who dont need to go underwater with it. Not insurmountable probs but annoying as it stands. I was going to give this unit a three star score ... it got four because Amazon dont allow 3.5 marks!. It acheived this by being sheer, blimmin' useful and no other similar product comes close for the price - tho maybe the GoPro Helmet Hero?. Anyway - its ok. I would recommend it as it stands but please Oregon Scientific bods ... please make the ATC3000 successor have a microphone that is of use .. .and package it in a cardboard box - the bubble pack thingy is unusable once its opened ... a nice storage case would be nice. Dont forget to see YouTube now - and decide yourself what the quality is like! Thats it. Now you can go! :-)
Complete junk April 29, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a hilariously poor product. The sales pitch describes an action camera designed for use in 'the most extreme conditions'. Using a high speed, high quality memory card, Duracell batteries, good daylight, and extremely mild action conditions, and with the unit mounted firmly using the supplied accessories, the results I have achieved have been pitiful and barely worth the effort. At best the footage resembles average mobile phone movie quality. The ACT2000 is nothing more than a toy. With the advances in digital technology this Millenium, there is little excuse for such a pitiful object.
It's Apple Mac Compatible March 15, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Just bought this, unwrapped it and had a little play with it. My initial impression is that it's a great robust little device, barely noticeable once attached to your helmet. The tiny LCD menu's really quite fiddly, but the film quality's pretty much OK - much better than you get from most phones, but not as good as a 'real' video camera.
The important news for me is that the Action Cam ACT2000 Helmet Camera is fully Apple Mac compatible. Even though the blurb and system requirements only mentions Windows XP or Windows 2000, there's no problem at all in plugging it straight into your Mac's USB port. iPhoto picks it right up, and allows you to import the .avi films just like from any other camera.
Shame about that fiddly little LCD though - on first impressions alone, I would have given it five stars otherwise.
Wow!! February 2, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
What a buy!! As a serving soldier I brought this for operations and exercise, the footage so far has convinced the regiment to buy one (and the army is tight!! LOL) The only let down is the sound quality, but its easy enough to put a decent track to what footage you have taken. I'm taking this to Afghanistan this week and can't wait.
Well worth the money, what ever you intend on using it for. Easy to set up, and very user friendly when it comes to viewing files. A 1GB card will give you 53 mins at medium setting at 30fps. which is more than good enough! VERY HAPPY with cam and all the straps, so far have used on on my helmet and underslung on my rifle. If you want a cam to capture any exploit you may undertake, this is it (even tried it in the troop bar!!)
