5 out of 5 stars Superb, well balanced earbuds.   August 27, 2008
I also own:

A pair of MDR EX85LP which are slightly bass heavy until you crank up the volume, then the mid-range cuts in. They are very detailed.

A pair of cheap "MDR EX90LP" from a non-Amazon seller. These look identical to the Amazon supplied units, although they came in a blister pack. There are a couple of differences however; the earbuds do not fit the carrier well - they get a little stuck - and the sound is compressed and "muffled" or "confused". They cost 12 and I guess you get what you pay for at that price, I got a fake.

Now I also own a pair of these Amazon supplied MDR EX90LP at roughly 50.

These Amazon supplied MDR EX90LP are supremely detailed. The bass isn't as heavy as the EX85LP. In back to back listening its even perhaps a little light. However it extends a tad deeper. Overall its a more balanced sound.

Unlike the 85LP There's no need to raise the volume to get the mid-range to cut in because the mid-range is there all the time.

Initially I thought the 90LP sounded a little bright, but a few minutes of listening had them settling down. Like any new speakers or 'phones they benefit from being used for a while before the real sound appears.

My verdict is that these are some of the best earbuds that I have ever heard.

My warning to all of you is to avoid the cheapest sellers, as you'll only regret it later. Buy the real units, not the fakes, and you won't have any problems. The offer price is a big hint about the origin of the units.

If you did buy some 90LP units and they sound compressed and muffled, you simply haven't got genuine Sony drive units in those pretty casings.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Headphones!!   July 30, 2008
I have had headphones before but these are by far the best! The sound is excellent and cancels out noise brilliantly. They are very loud and I sometimes have to keep my iPod volume at half for it not to be too loud! However the bass is not very impressive. Perhaps this is due to the ipod itself as I am comparing the bass to the Walkman's MegabassTM which is far superior. The headphones fit very comfortably and do not fall out like the original ipod headphones. This is a very good buy!

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant but just broke!   July 23, 2008
This is probably the best pair of headphone's I've ever owned (so far). In the past 3 years I have gone through a pair of Sony EX71s and Sure E2Cs, with the EX90s blowing them both out of the water.

The Sures had great sound but annoyed the hell out of me as their weight and design kept making them slip out of my ear in the gym. The EX71's were decent, but had a very frail cable in which the rubber wore away after a few months. After that, I was hesitant to buy another pair of Sony's but I decided to plop the cash down on a pair of MX90's anyways.

The sound is absolutely brilliant, although the bass isn't super strong. To be honest, no longer being a teenager, I much prefer a clear, audible bass than a rumbling distorted one anyways. They look great, feel perfect in my ear and effectively block out most external noise. Unfortunately, after a year of solid use, the cable is dying on me again, with the rubber coating pulling away from the jack and exposing the copper wires inside. Then, just yesterday the sound started conking out from the right ear and there doesn't seem to be any amount of wiggling or adjusting that can fix it. And of course, my year warranty JUST expired so now I have to buy another pair. I've been (mostly) loyal to Sony for over a decade, but I think I may actually go with some Sennheiser CX 95s this time around.

Bought and loved pair of 40 fonotopias abount 3 years ago but recently lost them - gutted

Thought I would get these, more expensive so better yes?

No, old ones fitted in ear perfectly, wore for hours , why Sony think that adding a frisbee onto them and expect them not to rub your outer ear raw after 10 mins is beyond me

Do not buy, bass is poor - what bass, fit is poor and uncomfortable. Go for cheaper versions which do not have a dinner plate attached to the section that fits in the ear

Why can't designers learn from history of good design-beware clever photo angle is misleading

3 out of 5 stars Great design, average quality.   June 27, 2008

Having used these headphones for only a few minutes I found the sound quality not as good as other Sony headphones which is disappointing considering the price of them.
My previous headphones were the Sony MDR-EX32 which are far superior and less than half the price, (I may go back to using these).
One other thing I have noticed is that the volume I get from my Sony NW-E005 MP3 player is higher using these headphones compared to my previous ones. I understand that european regulation limits the upper volume level on MP3 players sold in the UK.
I would also recommend the Sennheiser MX 55 headphones, not as bassy as the MDR-EX32 but better overall than the MDR-EX90LP.
