Excellent recorder August 31, 2008 1. Good unit, easy to set up. 2. The remote puts all the necessary functions within easy reach: EPG, timer, slide show. 3. Good manual: clearly organised, well written, useful index. 4. Good slideshow: there's even an "angle" button on the remote so you can rotate images with one touch. 5. You can watch a DVD while recording to the HD. 5. Good connectivity: you can connect digital cameras, and through the USB port you can play slideshows from USB jumpdisks, CF cards, etc.
A bit dissapointing August 21, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this because, yes it's a sony and it upscales to HD 1080p brilliantly. Why am I dissapointed, I have multi region dvds, but alas it doesn't play multi-region dvds, Other than that it's fab. I suppose you can't have every thing. I did search and this was advertised (not on amazon) as multi-region compatible.
Excellent piece of kit August 3, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Just got this to replace our JVC HDD/DVD recorder that went bang for the 3rd time.
I can thoroughly recomend the Sony, easy to set up, easy to use and excellent picture quality. Streets ahead of the JVC in every way.
The instuction manual is not as intuitive as the machine itself, but has all the answers if you look carefully.
HIGHLY recomended
It's just like 1983! August 3, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
After spending 3 hours reading the manual, I worked out how to record one channel while watching another (NB you also need a freeview box/TV to do this)! Great or what? My Dad's old Sharp VHS could do that (and you had to read the instructions for that from cover to cover as well).
Back to the future.
Still, well worth it for the fact that none of my monthly take-home kicks back to Rupert.

Sony RDR-HXD870 - DVD Recorder With 160GB Hard Drive - With Freeview - Black I bought one of these in June (from a different store for about 9 more as there's was multi region)and haven't regretted it since. I have a pioneer 42" Plasma TV with built in freeview which the Sony is hooked up to and though the freeview on the TV is prone to breaking up I've found the freeview on the Sony far more stable only occasionally pixellating. I've mentioned this because in most of the reviews I read while researching which DVD/HDD recorder to get, the fact that the inbuilt freeview aerial in the Sony was supposed to be poor quality, compared to the panasonic, came up quite a lot of times. Also during my research there were a lot of queries as to whether you could watch one program and record another, well the simple answer is yes as long as you watch the other program through your TV's tuner or Sky box (obviously if you have Sky) i.e. exactly the same as if you were using a video recorder. I have found that the 160gb HDD is certainly large enough for my needs (holds well over 60 hours of recordings at a good resolution) and even more if you lower the resolution, though why anyone would want to lower the resolution is beyond me. I love the one press record feature which I use on almost a daily basis and when I go to view the programs I've recorded to the HDD, there is a little preview screen next to each recording which automatically starts when you click on the name or date of the program recorded, which is very handy when you have more then one recording on the hard drive waiting to be viewed. The picture through the Sony is also very crisp and clear especially when using its digital freeview aerial and also whilst playing DVD's. I have yet to try all the inbuilt features of this recorder(could take a while, there's that many of them), all in all I'm very pleased I bought the Sony in preference to what seems to be its main rival(the Panasonic) and can't recommend it highly enough.
