3 out of 5 stars Somewhat frustrating (iTunes)...   July 6, 2008
I bought this for my daughter (11) as she was keen on it. Despite the 'glamour' of iTunes and Apple itself (and being PC literate), we find navigating transfers (music and movies) really quite frustrating, with required 'ejections' etc and songs not synching properly in an intuitive sense. It is surprisingly much less intuitive than I expected (-iRiver's Drag and Drop is SO much simpler and effective). After several days, we still find video transfers erratic and had to do manual transferring to get it onto the iPod (then we lost what was already synced, though warned somewhere). Moreover, I got Apple's "white screen of death" at the very beginning and had to reset the iPod to solve the defect (losing our first data). There is a measly manual with the packaging so you have to get onto the web to sort out your problems.

The much promoted iTunes Store (which seems to be much easier to access from within iTunes than our own iPod) goes through the purchase procedures before telling me that downloads are not possible for my country (Sri Lanka)... waste of time! It also asks for credit card details (though I did not purchase anything) which was unexpected; I only wanted to set up an account to try out the Store for my child without entering card data or having this as default in case she accidentally ordered something.

The hardware is definitely "sexy", and it is a neat player. But it is a pain that it can only be charged when your PC is switched on - we did not know that at purchase or installation. Battery power is also poor, a few hours on audio (many MP3 players do much better).

Overall, not impressed despite the lovely looks (and fragility) of this well known gadget. There does not appear to be any continuing defect as such on the machine; our frustration seems more on the software. I would prefer iRiver in most respects (which is also much more 'open' - less proprietory limitations - in what it reads and transfers), much as I would like to like this device.

5 out of 5 stars AHHH   June 5, 2008
I love my ipod. I use it every day. It got me through all my revision and i dont know how i lived without it. But this week it has stopped working on me and im fairly sure that this is the worst day of my life. Can anyone tell me how to fix my ipod?? It wont turn on and if it does, it turns off again before i can do anything with it. It sometimes wont even turn off!!! Its really confusing and i would love to know if there is anyone who knows where i can get it fixed?? in Northern Ireland. This is the most amazing bit of kit and the most used Christmas present anywhere!! I need it!! Please Help me!!

3 out of 5 stars Might be small, but it's not exactly mighty.   April 22, 2008

When my sister got one of these babies for christmas I thought, whilst it cost nearly 4 times as much as my mp3 player, it also had 4 times the memory, and it also was compatible with itunes and syncs with the computer to allow teh same playlists on the player and teh computer itself, so after 4 months I got one myself, and having never use my sister's, I was quite unimpressed. The headphones, whilst having good sound quality, are far to small for my ears, so they are not held in place very well, and they don't rest close enough to my inner ear, meaning it has to be turned up to full volume, which means not only I am listening to it, but everyone in a a 10 feet radius is aswell. Also it doesn't adjust all tracks to be teh same volume, like my computer does, menaing whenever certain songs cme on, I'm deafened. The final moan is that the only way the cover flow can be viewed is by album, which is not good for me because I list my songs by artist. So alot of moans, but the 3 stars are for it's size, it's fair price, and the sync-ability with itunes.

5 out of 5 stars A great gadget and very useful for long journeys   March 25, 2008

This Ipod Nano is the third generation from Apple. Once again they've made it much smaller and thinner. However, as it's made to play videos this time you get a far wider screen than the previous Nano's.

The 3G Nano is an example of very sleek design. One look at the Nano in the flesh and you can tell you own something that will end up in the history of this decade. Much like when the Sony cassette Walkman came out in the 80's, the Ipod will be forever linked to the 2000's. As previously mentioned the new design of a wider screened Nano is to display video content. Originally however ITunes didn't seem to offer much but as time has gone on there is a descent selection of BBC, Channel 4 and American programmes available. Episodes and whole series are good value for money and the picture quality is excellent. It's also easy to watch and enjoy even though it's on a tiny screen. As time moves on Apple and ITunes will hopefully introduce films to download as well, which will make the Nano even more useful for those long boring train/plane journeys.

Music once again is very easy to put on and play on your Nano and with the new artwork scroll feature you can whiz through your collection and easily pick out the album your after. Its not a terribly useful feature but it is fun to use. Again all your music is catalogued and you can even search for artists using the Nano's search engine. Games are much improved with better longevity (the music quiz game is particularly developed and better for it). You can also download more advanced games such as Sonic The Hedgehog or Brain Training.

The Nano has is certainly iconic but for all it's flash it still is not the fool proof gadget it should be. Mine broke on first use and had to have the latest drivers re-installed to kick start it again. It can also jam up and stop working with certain commands and needs to be either re-started or clicked back a command. In terms of "hardiness" the Nano is as flimsy as ever, the screen is better than the old Nano's, but you feel if you dropped it you'd be in danger of completely breaking it. Too this I would urge you to buy a quality case for it.

The Ipod Nano 3G is an excellent gadget and for all its little faults its actually very useful. Remember all those times in the airport and the bus or train with nothing but a book or a newspaper to read. Well now you can enjoy an episode or two of your favourite TV show. It's such a great idea and really helps pass the time. To this end I would say it's a great improvement on the old Nano's, not perfect, but I would certainly recommend this to anyone who is looking for an upgrade or their first Ipod.
