Great value A3 scanner March 6, 2008 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
Considering most other A3 scanners involve you having to take out a second mortgage to be able to afford them, this is a real barg. I've not used one of the more "professional level" A3 scanners but I've got a more expensive Epson A4 scanner and to me this Mustek one is still pretty good... and can scan an area double the size. Nice!
I've read a lot of reviews about scanners and people often complain about colour reproduction, how dark/light scans were etc. but I think these comments often relate to "one click" scans whereby people assume you're going to get a perfect reproduction without any user intervention whatsoever. Also I'd never let my scanner save an image as a JPEG, I'd always suggest scanning a raw image into a program - preferably Photoshop - before saving it.
Given that I use Photoshop most of the time my main concern is: can I get a decent picture out of the scanner even if it involves a little tweaking? The answer here is "yes". I never use any of the tweaky adjustment settings you get on the scanners themselves, I just want a nice clean "uncorrected" scan and then I'll descreen it / adjust the levels / sharpen it myself in Photoshop, thank you very much. I was a little unsure how good the images were going to come out at first with this scanner but all the scans I've done so far are nice and clear and the end results are comparable to images I've obtained via my Epson scanner.
One minor quibble I have is that Photoshop CS3 more often than not refuses to scan via the TWAIN driver and will just crash. This could be another "feature" of the ever wonderful Vista or possibly some bug in CS3. From doing a little reading around it looks like CS3 has some weird stuff going on which wasn't happening in CS2 and it also seems that it's not just this scanner that people have been having problems with. At the moment it is a bit annoying but I've resorted to using the Ulead Photo Express software that comes with it for scanning images in and then I fiddle with them in Photoshop afterwards. Adobe Bridge's "Photo Downloader" seems to like using the TWAIN driver with it so it does imply that it's Photoshop that's got the problem here. I must point out that you can import via WIA in Photoshop but you don't get all the settings you might want like choosing an odd DPI setting etc.
Build-wise it's quite a light scanner and I wouldn't think it'd take much to break it but you're not likely to be lugging it around much... hopefully! It cunningly has a black background on the inside of the lid which is a great idea as you're able to reduce or remove any "bleed through" of text from the other side of a sheet of paper with virtually no effort. I always used a piece of black paper before so I've found this really handy.
In terms of speed, it's probably not going to win any awards but I've been scanning in near A3 size images at 600dpi and it takes about a minute, which I don't think is too bad really.
Overall: for the money it's great value. It's A3 and if you know what you're doing you should be able to get good LARGE images off it. Even if you like to rely on scanners adjusting colours for you and descreening and all of that you can't really complain for the money.
