4 out of 5 stars Shaving, to Waxing, and now this...   July 12, 2008

It seems that I am collecting Braun appliances. I also have an electric toothbrush and a hairdryer as well as this..

I used to wax but having to let my hair grow long enough for that was an annoyance. Shaving was out of the question as I don't have the time, or in fact the money to afford a Gillette pack of razors. So epilating was a good option.

As a beginner I found the starter pack was handy indeed. The ice pack numbs the area first so you can't really feel the pain. It also has a starter head to grab less hair at a time, and a starter clip on head that has rubbery sprung nodules that massage the skin. This basically takes it easy on you as you become used to the whole thing.

As it comes with two roller heads (that grab the hair) and two clip on heads, that determine how close it is to the skin, you can mix and match until you are used to epilating. It also has two speed settings so there really is great flexibility. You can be a wimp and do it slow or be Rambo and whip them off fast.

The light is a necessity. I cannot understand why other brands do not have this feature. You cannot really see which hairs you have not covered without it. Especially under the arms where it is hard to see and I would recommend using a mirror.

It has a nice little mesh bag to keep it all together, and a cleaning brush. You will be surprised how much hair it takes away.

If you choose to epilate it does hurt at first and is quite uncomfortable but it does go away and in my opinion is the best way to get rid of hair. If you want a good epilator I would really recommend a Braun.

4 out of 5 stars Lasts but painful hair regrowth   July 6, 2008

I have waxed in the past but the pain of epilating was still quite prominent, especially since I have quite a bit of hair. It hurt doing underarms but was well worth it as it lasts longer and is smooth, same applies to the bikini line.
I found epilating the whole of both legs took quite a while and was quite painful in thigh region. However the worst aspect of the epilator for me was hair regrowth. For almost a week my legs were itchy as hell! i had to buy creams to soothe them and now exfoliate far more often than I used to. SImilarly, ingrown hairs were never a problem for me but epilating causes them frequently.
As some other reviews have pointed out, it doesnt give a completely smooth finish. I have to use it with the razor to have a silk finish.
Overall, I dont regret buying an epilator. Its much better than home-waxing, and you get used to the pain, but neither was it life-changing for me as it has been for others. If you are on the fence I would say buy it. You won't know until you've tried it.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it!   June 2, 2008

It kills but it's worth it. I have a low pain threshold and have used this for my bikini line for approx 6 months and it is just as effective as a wax in a salon but you do it in the privacy of your own home. Legs take too long for me but underarms are easy and no problem if you use the safety rollers. Fabulous gadget!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Product   May 11, 2008

Very good bit of equipment. Since buying it I have used it regularly - money well spent. The first time I used it I found it immensely painful to use - not unlike holding a flame under my arms. However, I persevered and now there is little or no pain at all and the hair removal is very effective. Far better than shaving, far more cost effective than waxing, no sore skin like you can get with creams. Highly recommended. Dont't buy cheap, buy a decent machine like this one.

3 out of 5 stars What i expected really...   May 1, 2008

I decided to buy an epilator because shaving left my hairs ingrown and disgusting (!!), waxing is too expensive and timeconsuming, also messy if you do it at home, and creams and stuff are more trouble than they're worth. On all these points, the epilator definitely wins.... but boy does it hurt!! People say if you can handle shaving this is no problem, but in my opinion it does hurt a lot more, because each of the hairs is coming out individually. It was a real challenge to get both my legs done, and they do sting a lot afterwards... i also found that the cooling pad had very little effect. But what can i say, hopefully the pain will get less as time goes on, and apart from being quite timconsuming as well, epilation is the best hair removal method for me.
In terms of how this model rates against others, I don't have any experience of other makes but i'm guessing that this one pretty much ticks all the boxes as far as epilation goes.
Hope this helps - a good buy all in all, i'll just have to get used to it!!
