Amazon.co.uk Review The Kenwood JE550 Centrifugal Juicer is an inexpensive way to get fresh fruit and vegetable juice in just a few seconds. Its compact size means it'll stand unobtrusively on the kitchen worktop and save valuable space when not in use. Operation is simple--cut your fruit or vegetables small enough to fit in the hopper on top and select slow speed (for soft food) or fast speed (for hard food). Use quality produce and in a minute or so, three oranges and two grapefruit will fill the half litre juice jug with delicious juice that's far superior to the long life or even bottled fresh variety. A specially designed lid keeps the juice foam from tipping into your glass but if you're partial to it, simply remove the lid. Cleaning takes a while, but the juice makes it worth the effort. A citrus press such as the Russell Hobbs Citrus Press is a more efficient way to process oranges and grapefruit, needing no fruit peeling, producing more juice, and requiring less cleaning. However, for those with a taste for vegetable juices as well as the sweet tang of citrus, the JE550 would be the perfect compromise. Just don't mix them together--Kenwood's manual warns about the explosive digestive effect of fruit and vegetable cocktails. --Mark Gilbert

Trading up to get more juice July 17, 2006 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
I have owned this juicer for over a year now and would not recommend it, do your research and get one that gives you more juice and is less hassle. If you juice carrots and apples, you end up with wet pulp with the odd slice of carrot and apple in, you can squeeze loads more juice out of the pulp with you hands! You have to put the pulp through at least 3 times to get the pulp anything like properly processed and slightly dry; and this makes the juice really frothy and it gives you indigestion. It doesn't process kiwis, melons or papayas, they are too soft for it, you end up with a puree that seeps over the machine. The hole that you put the fruit and veg into is small and you have to do loads of chopping and preparation to get it in. The only plus is that it is quite easy to clean and it goes in the dishwasher, apart from the steel basket that has to be scrubbed by hand. My advice is to spend more money and get a better one, I will be.
new juicer July 12, 2006 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
After struggling to decide which juicer to buy - there are so many, I settled on this one because of the price. Its easy to use and clean. I'm a juicing convert. You can probably get ones that are more high tech, but this is just fine.
Not a good juicer March 31, 2006 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
I usually like Kenwood as brand but I regret buying this product. The juicer cannot handle the humble apple let alone a carrot. The rasping plate is not effective and it becomes clogged with apple so very easily, and frequently. It takes an enormous amount of apple to nake the smallest amount of juice and so much is wasted. I am very disappointed.
This machine is a real value for money entry into juicing March 28, 2006 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I decided to try juicing in order to benefit my health and start enjoying more fresher than fresh juices. I have used it daily for over 4 weeks now and I am delighted with it from a value for money angle. It clearly isn't as good as machines costing 300 or more which leave little waste etc, but it is not expensive and does a terrific job. If you buy cheap fruits, the waste is not so much a problem. I think of it this way; I couldn't afford a top of the range juicer so it was this one or give up on the benefits of the joy of drinking pure fresh juice. It will juice grapes, pears, apples and if you put banana pieces inbetween pear pieces you will get some juice from them also. It makes a terrific smoothie when the juice is mixed with yoghurt or Alpro soya alternative. You have to be careful not to mix citrus fruits with others however. It has 2 speed settings and will juice carrots and other hard vegetables. Just keep away from pulpy, stringy and seedy things and you will be fine. I find it takes just 5 minutes to clean if I do it straight away and get into a routine. The pulp washes out quickly and a small brush will remove bits quickly. The hardest thing to clean is the mesh filter but a small brush whilst holding in under warm water does the trick - 5 minutes and all done and ready for the next time. Next time I may go up-market in my choice of machine, since I am sold on the idea of fresh juices now, but if you are new to juicing like me, this is a great starter and you will not have lost a fortune if you don't take to it. The healthy feeling you get from the fresh juice may tell you it was worth it though. I like it a lot.
Probably not the best in the world, but good for the price February 1, 2006 29 out of 29 found this review helpful
As a novice juicer, I can't compare this model with others. However, I've had it for a month or so now and have discovered that, for things like apples and carrots, it does a good job - the pulp seems quite dry, which must mean that a good amount of juice has been extracted. I tried a kiwi and it was a complete waste of time - it just sent the whole thing into the waste container, there was no juice at all! So it's perhaps not that good for softer fruits, but OK for medium/hard ones. The instruction book, whilst not containing any recipes, does warn you that you need to peel things like pineapples, which explains the problems that other reviewers have experienced, so take care to check this out if you buy one. Since it can't cope with tough skins, or very soft fruits, it's perhaps not as versatile as a more expensive model. However, I paid a tenner for it on Amazon, so I wasn't expecting too much - I thought it would be a good "starter" model and give me an idea of how keen a juicer I was. Cleaning really isn't a problem, as long as you scrape out the waste and rinse it under a running tap pretty much straight away, and give the filter a good brushing under the tap too. There are a lot of nooks and crannies in the lid which are not easy to get a brush into, so prompt rinsing is essential. I'ts not that much of a chore, but could become one if the pulp was allowed to dry. If you're thinking about getting into juicing, it's a cheap way to give it a try - just keep away from kiwis!
