5 out of 5 stars Great rice cooker   June 28, 2008
I've had this product for 18 months now and used it pretty much every week since I got it. I use it mainly to cook rice. I find that to cook rice to my personal taste for 2 people, you need to add slightly more water than it recommends, but this tends to vary based on the type of rice being cooked, and is no problem at all really.

I have also used it as a multi-function device to cook rice, and steam veg and fish at the same time. The tray is pretty small, but you can cook enough food for 2 people (just about). I have used it as a slow cooker, and it was ok. I haven't really experimented with it as a slow cooker, so I'm sure I could get some tasty results, given time. For me mainly, it is used as a rice cooker, and it's good. The other functions are an occasional bonus which is useful as I live in a flat with a small kitchen.
The styling is good, and it still looks smart 18 months on. It is however, bigger than it looks in the photos, so make sure you have a good corner to put it in.

5 out of 5 stars If you hate cooking rice you will love this   June 19, 2008
I bought this tefal 4 in one rice cooker about 3 weeks ago, well i cant beleive how great it is. You simply put in the rice, water and a pinch of salt, close the lid and hey presto perfectly cooked rice. You donot even have to set a timer as the cooker knows how long to cook it for.Its best to rince the rice with cold water before puting in the cooker for best results. Its very easy to clean as it is nonstick, there is no messy pan to clean out afterwards. Also the water does not spill out over the sides as it is fitted with a steam collector which again just needs rinsing out afterwards. There is an alarm that buzzes when it is done then it keeps the rice warm untill you are ready to serve it. It is very simple to use, no complicated instructions,Its great and I love it .I have not tried the slow cooker or porridge, as only wanted the rice doing, because I was not good at cooking that in a pan. So if you are looking for a simple way to cook perfect rice, this is it....

4 out of 5 stars Minor issues   October 26, 2007

I've been using this now for over 6 months, but mainly as a rice cooker.
The rice turns out well, but I've had to experiment with the amount of water to be used. I normally add one more measure than it asks (so if I put in 3 units of rice, the water marker says to put water upto the 3 level, but I just up it to 4) and this helps give me lovely long grained rice. I even make pulao/pilaf in it & the vegetables cook beautifully along with the rice. My advice is to wash & drain the rice atleast twice and then soak it for a few minutes before cooking it (use the delay timer)
My main issues with it are:
1) Rice sticks to the bottom if I leave the cooker on after rice is done.
2) The starch collects on the lid and is a little difficult to clean, since the lid is not detachable.

I haven't really used this as a slow cooker or steamer, so won't comment on those aspects.

5 out of 5 stars A Chinese person's opinion   August 22, 2007

If you want to know how well a rice cooker is, ask someone Chinese or Japanese. They use a rice cooker at least once everyday, and can definitely tell you what makes a rice cooker a great one.

There are a few general things we need to know about a "rice cooker":

1. Use it only for cooking rice. If it tells you it can be used as a slow cooker, ignore it, or otherwise do not expect anything from it.

2. Use the right rice. Any rice can be done in a rice cooker, but for the best result, always use Thai rice. Experience tells us that mixing two brands of rice gives better taste too, so you are really into rice cooking like we Chinese people do, try it out.

3. When you use a new cooker or a new brand of rice, always adjust the amount of water you put. Try to start with more as rice has the capacity to absorb, you don't want it too dry.

4. Even for those rice cookers that have keep-warm function, always switch it off (mostly by unplugging it from the socket) once it switches to keep warm. Otherwise the rice will continue to absorb water and in some cases, will cause the rice to stick to the bowl in the cooker.

5. If you decide to use the steamer tray to steam food in the cooker while the rice is cooking, be prepared that the rice is going to be stickier than normal and not tasting as nice. They feel much heavier too. This is not the rice cooker's fault. All rice cookers can steam other things while cooking rice, at the expense of the texture of the rice itself. This is because the other stuff will interfere the steam current for the cooking rice.

For me, this tefal rice cooker is perfect as a rice cooker. It is extremely quick as well. 4 cups get cooked in under half an hour. The rice is fluffy and nice. Worth the money, no need to goto China Town or Oriental City to get those 120 pounds options (still made in China though)!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent rice cooker!Value for money   August 1, 2007

This rice cooker is not cheap generally. However, I'm very pleased with the performance.I used it mainly for making rice. The rice is perfectly cooked. If you leave the 'keep warm ' mode for too long, it may dry up your rice, so the tip is to switch off the rice cooker when you think it could be too dry when it is done.Another advantage is, no spillage of steam water around the rice cooker compared with the conventional rice cooker with a glass or metal lid. Also, rice does not stick to the bowl at all, easy for cleaning definitely. In conclusion, highly recommneded and it makes life easier and it encourages you to eat more.
