Good in theory... May 30, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
The idea behind the Bodum Travel Press is a simple one - to make a single cup of freshly ground coffee either at home or on the move when you have neither a cafetiere nor a cup available.
The Travel Press is a 0.25-litre cafetiere comprising a double-walled jar made of acrylic and a plunger and cap both made of plastic. Neither feels like they could compete with a glass/metal cafetiere for sturdiness so their long-term durability might be an issue. A sealable pouring spout on the plunger cap allows you either to pour the coffee into a cup or to drink directly from the jar whilst on the move (although doing this isn't a particularly comfortable or convenient experience.)
The Travel Press is just like any other cafetiere to use, you just place some ground coffee in the jar, fill it up with hot water, screw on the top and press the plunger down. The instructions say that you should only use coarse coffee grounds as fine ones could clog the mesh and stop the press from working properly although I have only used what I would call fine grounds and haven't experienced any problems in the (admittedly short) time I've had mine.
Aside from the potential strength issue, my main problem with this version of the Travel Press (and maybe I should have done my homework on this before buying one) is the size of the jar - 0.25 litres just isn't enough for what I would call a good-sized mug of coffee, filling it less than three-quarters of the way up. Anyone who takes their drink in a cup (as opposed to a mug) or who isn't so finicky about getting a large dose of caffeine in the morning should be okay, although 0.47-litre version of the Press is available so anyone looking would be advised to at least consider buying that one instead.
All in all I suppose only regular use of the Travel Press will tell if it was money well spent, although I do wish I'd gone for the larger version as this one is only useful for what I would call smaller cups. Still, when you consider that it only costs 5 it probably works out as a very good deal, although whether or not it was worth getting over a `proper' cafetiere is probably something I won't be able to answer until I've had it in use for a few months and been able to test its strength more fully.
